So You're in Fort Stewart/Hinesville, Georgia and Want to Volunteer?

Judilynn
President George W. Bush has asked all Americans to volunteer at least 4,000 hours during their life as a "new culture of responsibility." No matter what city or what state you live in there are great places for you to volunteer your time and efforts. It basically lies in the area you are interested in. Or sometimes volunteering will give you an interest in something you never knew about before. Volunteering is a great opportunity for young and old. Hinesville or Fort Stewart, Georgia abounds in plenty of opportunities for the person who would like to volunteer.

Being a military installation there are several volunteer opportunities on Fort Stewart, Georgia. They are managed by Army Community Services also located on Fort Stewart. You can volunteer your time working at various locations on post to include The Red Cross, Winn Army Community Hospital, Youth Services, Enlisted Spouses Club, Fort Stewart Schools, to just name a few. They have a youth program every summer also which is a great idea to get the younger generation involved and teaching them that volunteering is a wonderful option. You can find them on the web for more information at Fort Stewart ACS Volunteer Program.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities in the surrounding community of Hinesville, GA also. There are always people needed to donate their time, and Hinesville is no different. We can start with the usual suspects.

Liberty County Humane Society - 912-876-3647,279 Briarwood Circle, Hinesville, Georgia 31313. This is a great place to spend your spare time if you love animals. They have everything from greeters to dog washers listed for volunteer positions. It isn't just in Hinesville they are looking for volunteers either. There are Humane Societies and Pet Rescues all over the country that need good people with time to volunteer. It may be something as simple as walking dogs that fills your volunteer time, but think of all that you will get out of helping the furry four legged creatures.

Habitat for Humanity - Hinesville, GA - 912-369-6065 109 E Oglethorpe Hwy, Hinesville, GA 31313-3603. This is also another great place to be found volunteering your time. Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 200,000 houses on the basis of people volunteering their times and talents and others donating the material. It takes a lot of people to help build a house, from the most complex of electrician to the basic putting up shelves in a closet. They need common laborers as well as skilled craftsmen. They are sure to need a talent that you possess.

Liberty County/Armed Services YMCA - 912-369-3954 201 Mary Lou Drive, Hinesville, GA, 31313. There are some great opportunities at the YMCA. You can donate your time to teach a class, to help with their after school/Summertime kids care programs, coaching a sports team and they even need volunteer greeters. This is a great place to help out kids in your area, and get involved in physical recreation.

Mentoring Programs - All area schools have great mentoring programs. I found that by calling several schools and asking to speak to the counselors they can put you in touch with the various places to be a volunteer mentor to local students. They are also looking for tutors to volunteer to help their students in subject they are struggling with. This is a great way to help the next generation and help guide them with someone to look up to. Various local school information for Liberty County Give the school closest to you in the age group you are interested in mentoring a call and ask them where you could volunteer to help out.

These are only a few ideas for the many volunteer opportunities out there. I can think of several others that are in every community, meals on wheels, local libraries, local hospitals and retirement homes. The point is to get out and volunteer your time. You are giving of yourself and your time and you will get so much back in return. There are so many out there that will benefit from you volunteering, not least of all you. So go out there, volunteer and enjoy the warm fuzzy feelings that it gives you, for giving something back to your community!

I lived in Hinesville/Ft.Stewart in the 80s -- should I send my condolences? I did like the beach and Savannah though. Very good article.

You've suggested some of my personal favorites (though I'm not in Georgia). Great list of terrific causes in many cities and states.
