So You Think You Can BBQ, Huh?

Hot Fun in the Summertime Series

Lee Hansen
Raytown, Missouri gives small town USA a good name. Communities such as these always find creative ways to have fun for the residents and visitors alike. Here's a case in point.

On June 10/11-2011, barbecue will perk up one's sense of smell in preparation of the Raytown Summer Fest. It is held in conjunction with the 22nd Annual Raytown State Championship BBQ Cookoff.

Where

The event will take place in downtown Raytown at the intersection of 63rd St. and Raytown Rd.

Events

66 BBQ teams from around the four state area will be in a heated but fun cooking competition. This is sanctioned by the KCBS.

Prizes

This Raytown Chamber of Commerce sponsored event will reward participants quite handsomely. At stake will be $6,000 in cash and prizes. Ribbons will be presented for the top 10 places in the categories of beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken, pork sausage and miscellaneous items.

Kid's Que Contest

Children from 10 and under and 11-15 will be able to show off their culinary talents, too. Their entries must be from the hamburger and sausage category only. Additionally these young cooks must be partnered with a participating cooking team.

Activities

Carnival rides provided by Jones and Company will delight attendees. The Rugrats Arena will be open from 11-3 for a small fee.

Vendor booths will be available on the premise. The Raytown Chamber members and staff will provide BBQ they have prepared on both days.

Local legend, Chris Cakes will be flipping his famous pancakes from 7-10 a.m. on Saturday. The afternoon will be the time of the 9th annual "Sausage Sprint" dachshund races.

Entertainment Tent Happenings

"Four Fried Chickens and A Coke" will perform Friday and on Saturday "The Above Average Basement Band" will perform. With names like that, they've got to be good.

So if you're looking for some finger-looking, lip-smacking, mouth-watering barbecue with a little foot stomping action, this is the place to be.

Call the Raytown Chamber of Commerce at 816-353-8500 or visit the www.raytownchamber.com website for more information.

Chow and may the best team win!!
