So You Think You Can Dance Audience Goes 'out of Its Mind' for Alex Wong's Hip-hop Performance

Why the SYTYCD All-Star Format Works

"So You Think You Can Dance" viewers have gone from supportive to critical of the all-star cast on Season 7, but with Alex Wong's hip-hop performance on Wednesday night, June 30th, they may understand why the all-star cast works. Alex Wong, a trained ballet dancer from the Miami City Ballet, performed his first hip-hop piece alongside hip-hop dancing expert Stephen Twitch Boss, with choreography by Tabitha and Napoleon. And not only did Alex perform with an expert. He nailed the performance, too.

"This is your world, and I am just visiting," said Adam, one of the SYTYCD judges, before bowing down. The judge looked like he was going to burst into happy tears after seeing the performance.

Nigel agreed with Adam, stating, "If this routine and you are not up for an Emmy with Napoleon and Tabitha next year I don't know why. It's probably one of the funnest, best hip-hop routines we've ever had on the show."

And Mia couldn't wrap her mind around how Adam pulled it off. "Who the hell are you? You have defied everything about the ballet world...You dancing next to Twitch, he is unreal. He's the best in the business and you held your own."

That they did. In Season 7, this was the first routine with two same-sex dancers. The other routines had all been one guy, one girl. Even Tabitha and Napoleon were shocked by the news, but at the end of the performance, they stood up clapping and cheering, pumping their arms and sticking out their tongues to celebrate.

The duo performed to rapper Lil' Jon and LM*AO's "Outta Your Mind" with a skit that looked like Alex was in a therapist's office trying to get rid of all of his ballet thoughts. Twitch, his therapist, battled him and out came a new Alex.

While some SYTYCD viewers think it's unfair that the all-star cast is on the show and "had their shine," Alex's performance tonight was why this new format works. Too many dancers in the past have been cut from the program because their partners were slacking. The dancers would go from a total of 20 to 10 before voters could vote for each dancer individually. But if one partner in a routine sucked, voters didn't necessarily want to let the bad dancer slide through because they liked his or her partner.

With the all-star cast who already specialize in certain dance categories, there are no excuses. Viewers have the opportunity to focus on the novice SYTYCD dancers next to experts and vote on their skills instead of letting them slide right through. While Alex may have been a great performer with one of the remaining Season 7 cast members like AdéChiké Torbert, Ashley Galvan, Billy Bell, Jose "Full Deck" Ruiz, Kent Boyd, Lauren Froderman, Melinda Sullivan or Robert Roldan, it's difficult to believe any of them could rock a hip-hop routine quite like Twitch.

And knowing full well that Twitch was going to bring the best to Tabitha and Napoleon's performance, the pressure was on. Alex delivered. June 30th's performance was the best hip-hop routine I've ever seen on the FOX show.

Ballet? Really? Even though he hasn't done any ballet on the show outside of a couple twirls during that performance. *shrug* I never got into ballet. I remember seeing a rap ballet performance at my elementary school, and I thought that was hot, but I've always leaned more towards hip-hop dance. I took several hip-hop dance classes growing up at places like Bally's and The Discovery Center. That was always a lot of fun. I almost shed a tear when I found out this week he was eliminated from the show due to an injury. I hope he can come back next season in the same place he left. Anyway, thanks for reading.
