Each year I seem to drift towards a couple of favorites. And, this year is no exception. However, there is a LOT of talent in this year's group. And, I think the dancing will be that much more enjoyable.
Yesterday the top 20 performed for the first time. Here is what I thought of the performances (in order of performance not how I liked it).
• Jeanine and Philip - They performed a hip hop routine from Tabitha and Napoleon. What I like about their numbers is that they tell a story rather than just perform. This story was about a couple who fight before they go to bed, so they don't go to bed angry. This number floored me. I had already liked Philip because of crazy moves, but his partnering was spot on and Jeanine was her own force to be reckoned with. This was much better than I thought it was going to be. They are going to be a very formidable couple.
• Asuka and Vitolio - They performed a broadway number from Tyce Diorio. Okay, after watching the first pair, this number just didn't do it for me. I could see that they were dancing quite well, but I was bored, and you shouldn't be by such a number. I was drawn more Asuka than to Vitolio, but on the whole, blah blah...
• Karla and Jonathan - They danced a cha cha. It was cute. I remember liking it. But I don't remember much of the routine. That's the problem. He stays in my mind more than she does. He is adorable and that is what sticks with me, his smile.
• Randi and Evan - They danced a jazz number, again from Tyce Diorio. I loved it!! They both kept my attention and it was riveting. The movement was so fluid and beautiful. You know, I did not notice at all how small both Randi and Evan were until comparing them to Cat. They are both adorable and wonderful dancers. I was sorry to see Evan's brother leave, so I hope Evan will do doubly well for both of them.
• Paris and Tony - They did a hip hop routine. Again, it was from Tabitha and Napoleon. I think the problem here is that the first hip hop routine was much better. Even the storyline was better. So, although they weren't bad, they just didn't stand out. It was just eh for me.
• Caitlin and Jason - This was a Bollywood number. I absolutely adored it. I like seeing stuff I hadn't seen before and this was it. Amazing amounts of energy and great dancing. My second favorite of the night.
• Janette and Brandon - They danced a foxtrot. Wow, to follow the excitement of a Bollywood routine with a foxtrot. What can I say? It didn't do it for me. I never was a big fan of this dance, especially not after I just saw a previous dance full of fire and energy. I will give them credit, they were very beautiful and glided through the number. But, I just have to say, bored now!
• Ashley and Kupono - They danced a jazz number as crash test dummies. It was definitely unique. Not sure I really got it. Okay, didn't. But that is what makes this show so intriguing. I couldn't tell if I liked the dancing because the make-up and weirdness factor were too much for me. Ah well, hope they get another chance because I want to really be able to see what they can do.
• Melissa and Ade - They danced a contemporary number. I really liked them. They worked well together. Maybe I just like the idea of a naughty ballerina. Anyway, this was definitely one of the better couples.
• Kayla and Max - They danced a samba. Wow!! I think they had amazing chemistry. And they brought a great amount of energy to the last performance. So, I have a tie with the first performing couple and this, the last performing couple as the best of the night. It really was entertaining and made me want to dance. I am so glad this show is on television.
Except, I hate tonight. I wish dancers didn't have to leave. It would be so much nicer to let everyone keep dancing. However, it doesn't work that way.
So, as we all know, the group finds out the three couples who got the least votes. Then all 6 members perform for the judges and they decide one male and one female to leave the show. It could just be the end of one couple as we know it, or if two different couples get broken up then a new couple is formed with the remaining people.
The bottom 3 couples are:
Paris and Tony, Asuka and Vitolio, and Karla and Jonathan
Karla and Jonathan was a surprise, but there is always one couple you don't agree with. America sometimes doesn't get it right. Anyway, it's time for the solos. Here is how it went.
Paris - Her solo was just okay. If you are fighting for your life, you should make it look like it meant something. I don't think she did that.
Tony - Tony has a lot of personality. He is not the best dancer in this group. So, although I enjoyed it, I don't think he showed enough.
Asuka - She put a lot of energy into her solo. She made it look like she is in it to stay. There is something very charming about her.
Vitolio - I don't know, I don't see what they are raving about. I mean, I could never move like that, but I know what I like. And he did not do it for me with this solo.
Karla - I did not like her solo. I thought it was a little pretentious and didn't draw me in. She was my least favorite of all six performers tonight.
Jonathan - He was my favorite of the men. I think that he showed the most verve during his performance and I think he deserves to stay.
The judges didn't quite agree with me one hundred percent, but I can't fully argue with their choices. So there you have it. Paris and Tony are gone. There are no other changes to the line. Let's see the top 9 couples next week. Who knows what can happen??
