'So You Think You Can Dance' Says Goodbye to Alex Wong': Billy Bell and Ashley Galvan Safe

SYTYCD: An Emotional Parting for Alex Wong Due to Injury of Achilles Tendon

Karan Moses Robinson
It was a sad goodbye for Alex Wong on 'So You Think You Can Dance' Thursday night. Wong was voted off SYTYCD because he will have to undergo surgery on his Achilles tendon, which he ruptured during practice earlier this week.

The injury automatically put Wong in the bottom three dancers club, along with Billy Bell and Ashley Galvan. After Billy's and Ashley's solo performances, judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman eliminated Wong, who will need three months to recover after surgery.

"It will strengthen you," Lythgoe told an emotional Alex, who stood on the stage with crutches. Michaels told Wong he was "beyond special" and Shankman said he was an inspiration. Alex, who said he was hurting more on the inside than the out, was invited to return next season.

Indeed, the 23-year-old ballet dancer had proven himself the week before when he impressed judges and viewers alike during a hip hop routine. "This is your world and I'm just visiting," Shankman told Alex after that performance. "I am so proud of you!"

The elimination of Alex means Billy and Ashley are safe for another week. This was the first time Ashley had been in the bottom three, and Billy's second. I was a little surprised to see Ashley there because she had been "safe" for so long. Of course, there's no telling what will happen next week.

Judge Michaels apologized to Ade'Chike' for her criticism of him the night before, acknowledging she had been somewhat hard on him. She'd told him his performance was like doughnuts, meaning it was empty and had nothing there.

During the apology, she said her passion as a teacher led to the remarks, and that he'd been so good the week before, she wondered what had happened. I give Michaels top scores for a class act, and I'm sure she gave Ade'Chike' a confidence boost.

So, tune in next week to 'So You Think You Can Dance' because there's no telling what will happen next.
