So You Think You Can Dance Top 16 Results Show

Jennifer Posey
The show opens with a group number choreographed by Mia Michaels ("The Dance" by Charlotte Martin). I am completely mesmerized. I'm not sure exactly what the piece is, but I love it.

Cat calls the first group of dancers to the stage. Thayne and Chelsea T. are in the bottom 3; Joshua and Katee are safe, as are Chelsie H. and Mark.

The second group consists of Kherington and Twitch, Courtney G. and Gev, and Comfort and Chris. The first two pairs are safe, leaving Comfort and Chris in the bottom 3.

The final two pairs are Kourtni and Matt and Jessica and Will. My predictions are 100% accurate this week*, and Kourtni and Matt are joining the others to perform solos.

The judges don't seem surprised by the bottom 3 couples, but Nigel gives some constructive advice to Kourtni and Matt (giving him a chance to show off his acting chops: German, French, and Michael Caine accents/impressions). Kourtni needs to find the spark that they loved in the early audition rounds, and Matt needs to lose himself in the dance and become the characters he's meant to portray.

Cat introduces Quest, a dance crew including three previous SYTYCD finalists--Ryan (Season 1), Dominic (Season 3), and Hok (Season 3). They perform to "Chemical Calisthenics" by Blackalicious feat. Gut Chemist. The number is a lot of fun, and it's great to see some old favorites back on the stage again.

During the commercial break, the winner of the Snuggle Happy Dance Contest is announced. Congratulations Rheo!

It's time for the solos:
Chelsea T. "A Song for You" by Donny Hathaway
Thayne "Always" by Bon Jovi
Comfort "Just Fine" by Mary J. Blige
Chris "After Tonight" by Justin Nozuka
Kourtni "Fire Door (Live)" by Ani Difranco
Matt "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz

While the judges deliberate, we are treated to a performance by Jordin Sparks. She looks and sounds great, but I am a little disappointed that she's singing to a track. She does a great job managing the huge stage alone, but I would prefer to see her with a band and background singers.

As for the solos, I think the girls far outshine the guys this time. Kourtni's solo is my favorite--she really uses the music well. I think Matt's solo is the worst. He and Thayne both look like they messed up. But, what do I know? Nigel wastes no time telling Chelsea she's going home. He says to Matt that his "solo, tonight, was brilliant". (Maybe his advice paid off?) Chris is going home, and Thayne and Comfort will now be paired together.

I'm not too disappointed with tonight's results. The best dancers are still around and dancing really well. Will the regular bottom 3 folks step it up next week and give the solos to someone else? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

*NOTE: Even though my recaps aren't published the night the show is aired, I do write and submit them immediately following each telecast. No cheating on my part.
