Pro: It's an interesting career in a field you love
If you're considering a career in herpetology you obviously love reptiles. Thus having a job where all you do is study reptiles would most likely make you very happy and it's important to be happy with your work because you will spend most of your life working.
Con: A degree is required
To become a herpetologist a degree is required. The big letdown concerning that is only a few colleges and universities in the United States offer an actual degree in Herpetology. While you can get a degree in Biology if you want some places of employment might require a Herpetology degree because the specialty is so distinctive.
Pro: You have a variety of work options
You can work as a researcher, analyst, at a zoo or wild animal park, any pet emporium or other reptile related arena. There are a lot of options. You could even be a reptile handler.
Con: Specialty jobs are limited
You'll have to compete with other for the top ranking specialty positions as and the number of positions is limited.
Pro: How many herpetologists do you know?
Being a herpetologist is an amazingly interesting job. How many herpetologists do you know? Everyone will ask you what you do and you'll have the opportunity to speak with everyone about what you do and what you love about it. If you really love your job you'll enjoy gushing about it and explaining what it means to all that ask.
Con: The inherent risks
If you're working with reptiles there are inherent risks. You could be bitten by a poisonous snake. You could catch some foreign disease from lizard scales caught under your nails. You might develop rashes from toads. There are a number of things that could happen when you work with any sort of reptile or other animal for that matter. You have to be careful with how you handle them and most importantly, how you clean yourself afterwards. Many people forget the true importance of good hygiene and this is extremely important for those handling any living beings.
Being a herpetologist can be a rewarding career, you just have to really want it and then take care of yourself and enjoy every minute of it.
