So You Wanna Be a Police Officer?

Writing Pro
So you want to be a police officer? It's a great career but have you looked at it from all angles to make sure what it's what you really want to do? Here are some pros and cons to help you make your decision.

Pro: It's a respectable, reliable career
We will always need police officers so as long as you don't do anything stupid to mess up your career, you have job security. You are seen as a model citizen and all sorts of people look up to you. As a model citizen you'll be invited to attend several different local functions and activities. It's an honor to be a police officer.

Con: You're in danger
Any job can be dangerous in one way or another. But as a police officer you get put into dangerous situations more often than most professionals. You can also become a target unfortunately. Sometimes criminals will target police officers or they become very upset after being busted by you and may want revenge. You have to always be aware of your surroundings and protect yourself and loved ones.

Pro: Great benefits
Police officers receive great benefits and retirement plans. If you put in your time you can live comfortably for the rest of your life after you retire. Also, there is a lot of room for advancement in the police department. You can promote and try out other aspects of law enforcement or become a member of a special task force within the department.

Con: Long shifts
As an officer you work long shifts. While it varies from department to department you typically work very long shifts although you usually only work four days a week. One thing to remember though is if you are on a case or working a crime scene and your shift ends, you have to stay and keep working because your testimony may be needed and you must finish what you started.

Pro: It's everywhere
Police officers are needed everywhere. You can relocate to any state and find a job. Also, since there are so many other opportunities for law enforcement in other areas (security, jails, training) you can try something different for a while if you so choose.

Con: The academy
To be considered for hire anywhere you have to do through the police academy. It's an intensive training that last a couple months where you'll be challenged mentally and physically. You have to be prepared for this and be able to make it through.
