So You Want to Try Humira

Janet Adair
If you have rheumatoid arthritis you probably have considered trying one of the biological medications. These medications block the tumor necrosis factor alpha that attacks the joint tissues. And not only do these medications stop the causative factors of RA but also stops the joint damage. Right now I want to talk about Humira the biological drug that I am taking for my rheumatoid arthritis.

Humira is taken as a weekly or bi-weekly injection. Once you get over the fear of giving yourself an injection it's not too bad. And learning a few tricks from others taking Humira can help a lot. First let your shot set out of the fridge for about fifteen minutes. In the mean time you could ice your injection site. Then clean the area with alcohol and give yourself the injection. Ouch! I know but it's only once a week.

One thing with Humira that concerns me is its side effects. They range from serious and deadly to just a little annoying. Here are a few of the serious side effects: tuberculosis, sepsis, nervous system disorders, lymphoma, cardiovascular problems, and drug induced lupus. And the most common side effects injection site reactions, sinus infections, headache, and nausea. And since I tend to be a worry wart I try to not think too much about the side effects.

I've been on Humira for two months now and can see a great improvement. I can ride my bike with my kids, rollerblade, and jump rope. And for the first time in ten years I feel almost normal. I'm thirty-one and have had RA for ten years. I've resented this disease that has taken so much of my youth. There were days when I felt eighty. So since taking the Humira I feel like I'm getting my life back. I now have the energy to play with my kids and be a better mother. I'm not in constant pain anymore and my joints aren't swollen. I can wear my rings! It's often the little things that we notice the most like typing on this computer.

Humira has not only improved my life but also the lives of my family members. Living with someone that is in constant pain holds everyone back. We would have to modify our activities to accommodate my arthritis. I am very glad for the success that I have had with Humira and would recommend it to anyone suffering with rheumatoid arthritis.
