So Why Did Hermione Granger End Up in Gryffindor House?

Did the Sorting Hat Make a Mistake?

Bible Doc
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the Sorting Hat (the hat that decides in which of the four houses the students at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry will be placed, sings a song during which it emphasizes the qualities that each house is famous for. Here are the emphases of two of the houses:

Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest."
Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name." (page 205 of the hardback edition)

Recently my daughter, who is a big Harry Potter fan, asked me something that I had never thought of before. She wondered if I thought Hermione Granger, one of Harry Potter's close friends (Ron Weasley is the other), should have been put in Ravenclaw by the Sorting Hat. It doesn't take long to figure out that Hermione is the most intelligent of the three friends. She consistently scores high on tests and has the ability to put different clues together in order to arrive at needed solutions to problems. She also is a "bookworm," spending hours in research in order to acquaint herself with the information that will make a difference in her life and the lives of her friends.

In short, Hermione seems to have the perfect personality and skills to be placed in Ravenclaw. So what is she doing in Gryffindor?

Did the Sorting Hat Make a Mistake? After all, the Hat has been around for a long time. Do Sorting Hats get senile? Does a frayed and ragged exterior reflect the deterioration of the inner hat? One clue that indicates that there possibly could be some indecisiveness on the part of the Sorting Hat occurs in Harry Potter and theSorcerer's Stone where the Hat doesn't seem to know quite where to place Harry. Harry is muttering, "Not Slytherin! Not Slytherin!" The Sorting Hat is saying that Harry could do well in Slytherin. Finally, the Hat assigns Harry to Gryffindor, where, as it turns out in the next book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry really belongs. Did the Hat know that all along or was it a stroke of luck that Harry ended up in Gryffindor?

Did the Sorting Hat Know What Would be Needed in the Future?
In other words, does the Hat work only with what it knows about the person standing in front of it-Hermione, for example-and make the best choice given that information, or does it know what combination of housemates will be needed to deal with the events of the future? The Sorting Hat's song in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix seems to indicate that the Hat is able to read the signs of what the future holds. If that's true, and if the Hat knows the people who are being sorted and put together, could it not overrule what would seem to be the natural assignments and, instead, work for the greater good by putting together people who will not only be friends, but would have the skills to support, encourage, and help one another?

Perhaps someone else could have served Harry in the same way that Hermione does, but it is Hermione who, at crucial times, provides the information and clues that help Harry work through problems and adventures, and emerge victorious. And, by the way, Hermione shows that she is brave as well as intelligent.

Did the Sorting Hat make a mistake? I don't think so. The Sorting Hat put Hermione where she had to be, and the proof is seen in scene after scene in book after book of the Harry Potter series.
