Soap Opera Fans Get Ready for the "Night Shift" and the Return of 1970s Sex Symbol Billy Dee Williams

Lorraine Hayden
Starting July 12, soap opera fans will be able to watch their some of their favorite characters from "General Hospital" spin off onto a new show called "General Hospital: Night Shift".

"Night Shift" will air on the cable network SOAPnet. The title of the show basically tells you what the show will be about, the goings on at Port Charles' General Hospital during the night shift. The 13 episode series will introduction new characters at the fictional Port Charles hospital.

According to SOAPnet's press release, the cast is being headed up by 1970s sex symbol Billy Dee Williams. Williams is known for his roles opposite of Diana Ross in "Lady Sings the Blues" and "Mahogany". He also starred in the Star Wars blockbusters "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 and "Return of The Jedi" in 1983 as Lando Calrissian.

General Hospital fan favorite Steve Burton will be on hand playing the lovable hitman with a heart of gold Jason Morgan. Kimberly McCullough will be working the night shift as H.I.V. positive "Dr. Robin Scorpio" and Jason Thompson as her love interest "Dr. Noah Drake" will be on board also.

Serious soap fans (as myself) have been participating on various internet forums discussing whether "Night Shift" with be a success or a flop like the previous GH spin-off "Port Charles". "Port Charles" lost its fan base when the storylines began to revolve around vampires. Yes! That's right, vampires.

The basic consensus from the online soap community is that "General Hospital: Night Shift" will be centered on the younger characters of "General Hospital" such as Lulu Spencer and computer hacker Spinelli. This week on the show was the introduction of three very attractive female nursing students who will be working the hospital's "Night Shift".

Fans will be happy to know that Jill Farren Phelps, the executive producer of General Hospital will be at the helm of "Night Shift" also. "General Hospital's" head writer Robert Guza Jr. will also be the head writer for the new show.

So can a show about the night shift at a hospital mean high ratings for the cable network SOAPnet? Word has it if this show is indeed a success, soap operas from the big three networks ABC, NBC and CBS will be making a move to cable. This can also mean more original soap operas on SOAPnet which currently broadcast repeats of daytime dramas in the evenings and on the weekends.

With an iconic figure such as Billy Dee Williams on the show, "General Hospital: Night Shift" is sure to attract soap fans who have abandoned daytime dramas due to the lack of older characters and the slow disappearance of veteran soap actors. I will tune in to catch the first episode, how can I resist the charms of Billy Dee.

So far I have found the show very enjoyable with some of the talented actors/actresses from GH. I'm curious...is the burn victim going to be Brenda Barrett and is it just coincidence that Cooper's last name is also Barrett? I think not. Good job GH. I love it!

The thing is not everyone can get SoapNet. :( We have cable but they don't have SoapNet. I hope it's not like PC when they wrote good characters off GH then never brought them back.
