Soaring with the Angels

A Poem Dedicated to Lt.Col. Charles "Charlie" Matthews: 1919 - 2005

Deb Martin-Webster
I wrote this poem in honor of my uncle who served with the first All-Black Army Air Corp squadron, The Tuskegee Airmen.

Commanding squadrons, giving orders
keeping us safely out of harms way
The Tuskegee Airmen the brave, the honored
soared proudly with the angels

His men respected and trusted him
to bring them home safe and sound
they swore an oath to serve him well
soared privileged with the angels

We knew him as our Uncle Charlie
not by his rank as Lieutenant Colonel
I salute this kind soft spoken gentleman
who soars peacefully with the angels

Philip, I salute your dad and all of the brave men who flew! My uncle Charlie's motto was, "No one soars with the angels on our watch." That was my inspiration for the poem. Glad they were there for your dad!

My dad was flyimg his wounded B-24 back from a mission and he saw fighters approaching him and he thought he was a goner for sure, but it was the Tuskegee airmen who escorted him safely back to base.
