SoBe Life Water: Product Review

Janet Trieschman
I was in line at Walmart this morning. I had taken the girls to their Mom's Day Out program and I was trying to get a mile long list of errands run. I didn't have time for breakfast and I was a bit parched. I should also mention I am trying to diet. I was standing next to the chilled beverages and with the other given high caloric choices, I grabbed a Life Water. Life Water is one of four different products in the SoBe line of beverages.

While I had never had a Life Water before, it was familiar. You might remember seeing the television commercial for Life Water, it first aired at Superbowl XLII where the lizard like creatures and Naomi Campbell dance to Michael Jackon's Thriller. Not surprising that SoBe is a Pepsi Co Company. Taking a trip down memory lane, you might also remember in the 1980's, Michael Jackson did a Pepsi commercial rewriting the words to Thriller and subbing the Pepsi Generation into the lyric. Pepsi must have a lifetime contract with the song!

SoBe offers a variety of five flavors of Life Water they are Passionfruit Citrus, Strawberry Kiwi, Orange Tangerine, Blackberry Grape and Pomegranate Cherry. I tried the Orange Tangerine. Life Water is infused with an herbal content. It is low in calories and is naturally sweetened. A large twenty ounce bottle, contains two servings for a total of 100 calories, with no fat, a bit of sodium, some carbs and sugars. Looking at the list of ingredients the first three, which are the highest volume in the product, are filtered water, sugar and natural flavor. As with other products, the mention of vitamins and herbs are used to sell the product. Appearing as something new on the market, it is mostly full of water and sugar. A new aged Koolaid with a high price tag.

It fulfilled my need for something liquid. Having never tried one before, I don't think I will again. It left a terrible after taste in my mouth and left my tongue and teeth feeling like they had a coating on them. While I was hoping for something refreshing with a bit of flavor, I think I would have been better off with a high priced bottle of water sans flavor. In my opinion, they will need to continue to put a lot of advertising dollars into this product to keep it hip and stylish in the consumers mind because the product itself will not bring repeat customers.
