Soccer Mom Melanie Hain and Husband Scott Found Shot to Death
Parallels Between Gun Control and Prohibition
According to CN Panyu, neighbors had heard the Hain children running out of the house screaming "Daddy shot Mommy!" Police were called at 6:20 pm.
This is not the first time Melanie Hain has made headlines. On September 11, 2008, she showed up at her daughter's soccer game with an openly loaded gun. According to Associated Press, the county sheriff revoked her gun-carrying permit nine days later.
Given the murder-suicides of Melanie and Scott Hain as well as high-profile school shootings at Littleton, Columbine, and Virginia Tech, it's only natural that such cases would spark debates about gun control and whether or not stricter laws would have prevented these senseless shootings. In the debate over gun control, one could point to parallels in prohibition.
There are compelling arguments against the constitutionality of federal gun control laws. The Constitution delineates basic rights including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the right to bear arms. There is, of course debate over the meaning of "well-regulated militia."
Still, one only needs to point to history to realize that federal restrictions on private behavior are unproductive. Alcohol prohibition of the 1920s led to violence, gangs, and the creation of the black market which ultimately increased the prices of alcohol. As a result, mobsters such as Al Capone were able to prosper during Prohibition. On top of that, prohibition did not even significantly curb the use of alcohol.
It's often said that a teenager has an easier time buying a gram of cocaine than buying a pack of cigarettes. That's teen has to show ID before buying cigarettes. Similarly, while the government can't always prevent tragedies like Melanie and Scott Hain, allowing citizens to purchase arms under regulated conditions is still better than turning guns over to the chaos and brutality of the black market.

Post a CommentMaybe we need to over look the facts. This is someone who went up against the system. Is this a murder/suicide or maybe there was a third hand in the deal.
Whenever someone tends to push the law, especially in county someone pays.
maybe someone wanted to get rid of the problem. Judges do not like to be seen as bad people, so maybe top get rid of the problem is the answer.
We all know there is one unsolved murder in Lebanon and since it has been tried to prove that there are some very important people who might have been involved inj the murder it gas gone unsolved for years.
Maybe we need to look outside the lines and maybe this was a set up used to cover it they use murder/suicide and with no actual witnesses they can say what ever they want and the public will believe it.
It's tragic when someone's obsession gets them harmed, but it is clear that this woman was driven by compulsive fears.
It's a pity that there isn't more focus in policy on mental health issues, and on allowing people to feel good about themselves without having guns.
America has moved on since the days when we were a frontier society. We do need to find a way of seriously reducing the number of guns that are out there, because most of the time, these aren't necessary and statistically, they increase the risk of suffering life-altering harm.
very powerful article.
From what I've read so far there are a few points that absolutely need to be thrown in the face of anti-gunners that attempt to capitalize on this.
1 - She was murdered. She is not some political pawn. RIP
2 - She was not shot with her own gun. Her gun in no way contributed to her death.
3 - Her husband (the murderous scumbag who got off far too easy for what he did) was a police officer - one of the only ones who can do no wrong. One of the ones the brady campaign for insanity thinks should have firearms while the rest of us (including her) should not.
4 - She mentioned in an interview on Gun Nut Talk that she does not carry at home. Something to consider if you live with a mentally unstable police officer who you are in the process of leaving.
Anti gunners who try to spin this as an example of a gun making you less safe need to have these points thrown in their faces.
Her tragic death cannot be allowed to be twisted into anti gun or even anti OC fodder.
Well, at least they didn't take her gun until they pried it from her cold dead hand...or her husband's cold, bloody hand...
It's ironic how bloodthirsty the more senseless "liberals" are when it comes to gun owners getting shot. What a bunch of brainwashed cowards.
Great comment, you must be a flaming liberal. I hope you sleep well at night.
i'm not buying the "guns = alcohol in the '20s" analogy, nor the supposition that more strict gun laws would turn people to the naughty black market...also the statement: "federal restrictions on private behavior are unproductive" is so general and open-ended to be just about meaningless...there are many "private behaviors" that are illegal in many states, and considered illegal by the fed...you do not have the freedom to do whatever you want privately in this country! (speaking of prohibition, making moonshine would be an example of a private activity not allowed) the irony of this case is the most glaring aspect, however...i certainly don't think she "deserved" what happened, but when such a staunch pro-gun advocate (bringing a loaded weapon to a kids soccer game, really?) gets tapped, you can't help but see the blinding irony...
Ana, noone ever DESERVES this....what an ignorant statement. These 2 left behind not 3 but 4 children and were both loving, kind and caring towards them. She fought for her beliefs to protect herself and did so LEGALLY, unlike many. There was many problems in this house and guns aren't to blame. Don't you think that in any situation if it turns bad, bad things can happen? Guns don't need to be involved to turn a problem into this. Our warped sense of human nature and densensitively to human lives shows us that whether it be guns, bombs, knives, poison, bare hands planes ANYTHING....when people can't communication, when situations get to a boil, well, bad things occur. Although both of them were gun lovers and collectors, they were both also great people, hard working, family oriented & spiritual. Nobody expected this and it leaves us in complete shock, can we look back and say we saw problems? Sure on both sides......but this was a very dramatic climax that wasn't something we ever tho
Nicely Written :)
