Soccer World

Who Would Have Thought?

Who would have thought
so many poems
Exist about soccer?

We think of European football
and mom's in minivans with lawn chairs.
Who would have thought
Soccer started in China?

The great Han dynasty
kicking leather balls into small nets
and then the modern sport began;
in England of course.

King Edward III saw danger early on
exclaiming "Na man play at the Fute-ball"
Long before the riots
and rampages of today's hooligans.

Frustration rises in spirited fans
when entire games pass
only once getting to cheer "GOAL".

Who would have thought
a patterned leather ball
Could unite and divide great Nations?

Cheers to the World Cup!
