Social Life: On or Offline

Samantha JJ
My daily life consists of looking after my children, cleaning, cooking, and more cleaning. When I have time to relax, I go on-line. Why you ask. Mostly this is because I don't have a social life other then on this computer. I have lived here, in this small town, for almost two years now, and I have only met one person. She has a social life off the computer, and very busy with her family. Oh, and she has a drivers license.

I don't have a driver's license, and my husband works a lot, at different hours. Because of that, I am always at home. The only time you see me leave my front door, or back door, is to go in the yard with my daughter during the summer. I know, I know, it's a very far walk, but I manage. I do get to go in town when my husband is not working to do groceries and appointments. Yippee, lucky me, I at least get to leave my yard then.

I have met so many people in chat rooms on the only game site I visit almost daily. I've been playing there for about a year and a half now, and I get super bored if none of the friends I made along the way are not on. My friends are on-line also, but mostly set for away on their instant messenger. This could be because they are out with friends, work, or visiting family.

My cousin introduced me to the game rooms I play in now. She was the one who got me started in playing in leagues also. Because of that I am very grateful. If it wasn't for her, I would never have met the wonderful people I now know as on-line friends.

When I first started playing in the rooms, I asked her if I have to talk to the people, and she had to laugh at that, and she said, I didn't have to unless I wanted to. Of course I was the one that initiated the chat because, I was curious where everyone was from. I was amazed at the variety of nationalities that play in there. When everyone found out I'm from Canada, I was asked questions with "eh?" at the end of there sentence. I did however played along.

There were quit a few rude people in some rooms, but there is a "mute" button. When you hit that button, you can no longer see what rude comments were being typed. There is also a button to "report abuse". Unfortunately I had to use that button more than I wanted to. If that person was reported enough times, they get banned from playing there again. Some people told me that just their user name gets banned, and some have said that their IP address gets banned.

There is a "private chat" button also. If you just want to talk privately, the rest of the people playing in that room cannot see what you are typing to your friend(s). It's very useful if the room is full of people and plenty of them are chatting. That way, you don't miss what your friend(s) are typing.

So, there you have it. How is your social life; On-line or offline? I do however keep myself busy with my hobbies other than my motherly duties. But, when the kids are sleeping I will go on-line and chat away with some very nice people. I hope you enjoyed my first story and will progress along the way.

Happy typing

Good article. Many people depend on their computer to communicate with the outside world. I seriously think if the internet wasn't around more people would get sick due to lack of human interaction. Internet Chat is like a phone call, but you have the ability to play games like "euchre"..etc with the person like you were sitting in the same room. Young or old we all need to communicate with someone wether its real life or not.

Enjoyed reading you. Good commentary about online socialization... it can be quite intimidating to those who haven't experienced it or grown up with it as a part of life... thanks for sharing and look forward to reading more from you.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. My next story is unfortunatly a personal experience per say. You'll see what I mean soon, I hope. I've been doing research on the web to make sure I have all the facts.

I like your writing. I would much rather read someones personal experiences with life than I would something written from a news story or taken off a newspaper. Good Job

i Found it interesting because I used to play in on line game rooms. Nowadays I don't have time because my time on line is spent playing with my page, and I have contacts throughout the world because of that. The computer is a very useful tool for bringing the outside world in.
