Social Networking Choices Beyond Facebook

Pat Bartels
Most people I know use social networking. Facebook seems to be the most popular. It's amazing how many people participate in this past time and how many sites beside Facebook that exist.

I've tried a couple of the most popular social networking sites. Facebook is one that I use most often. That's the site that many of my friends and family have also joined. My first experience with a social networking site was MySpace. I didn't find this site as user friendly as Facebook, but MySpace was the first experience in social networking for a lot of people.

More recently I have had experience with sites such as RedGage. This site calls itself a social networking site. It's a bit different than others as you can share content from other sites and you are paid for page views that you receive. You create a profile and you can invite friends. It's also a great site for sharing your photos.

Twitter is a very interesting social networking site. Instead of friends you follow and are followed by individuals and companies. You send tweets that are limited in length and everything is posted instantly. Your postings are limited to 140 characters. This lends itself very well to people using cell phones such as iPhones and smartphones for texting. You can follow people by allowing Twitter to broadcast to your cell phone. Personally I find it distracting especially if you have someone who tweets a lot.

There are many other social networking sites such as: Friendster, Bebo, Yahoo 360, Windows LiveSpace, Netlog, hi5, Orkut, PerfSpot, Zorpia, Flickr, and I'm sure there are others that I haven't mentioned. These different sites appeal to people of different age groups and interests. For instance, MySpace appeals to bands and clubs, Flickr for sharing photos, Facebook for keeping in touch with friends and families, Facebook pages appeal to people promoting businesses, causes, and politics.

If a person is interested in social networking they can certainly find a site that may appeal to them. Social networking offers games, and communication on a scale that was not possible prior to the late 1990s. These sites can also be troublesome. Just like anything else on the internet caution must be used so that too much personal information is not provided. Young children and teenagers should be monitored to protect them from possible abuse.

There has been some discussion about how too much social networking can be harmful. People can become so involved that they take time away from work, family, and the real world. If your real world relationships and work suffers from you online activities, then it's time to assess your priorities in life.

Social networking can be a way to communicate especially with family and loved ones who do not live close to each other. You can communicate with people from all over the world. As long as you balance your online activities with your responsibilities, and guard your security, social networking can enhance your everyday relationships.

I loved this article! For me as well, MySpace was my first experience in the social networking world. I even met my soulmate there when we weren't even looking! I find that I am more on Facebook these days, & that is probably because most of the people with whom I'm interested in remaining in touch are on FB more. I don't like Twitter, not enough writing space. :P

Great article. I don't have time to be involved in anything other than AC and my own work. I contact friends by phone or e-mail. I really am a girl who loves to chat on the phone.
