Social Networking for Seniors: Five Sites Worth Trying

Angie M
Social networking is no longer exclusive to the younger crowd. While sites such as MySpace and FaceBook seem to dominate social networking on the web, these media outlets seem to be a big turn off for many seniors and those over the age of fifty. However, there is a new trend of social networking that is geared particularly to seniors. Unlike other popular networking sites, these sites not only offer familiarity but often consist of simple processes that don't require the user to be tech savvy or have a lot of experience on the personal computer. Although there are not many of the social networks for seniors all over the web yet, here are a list of the top five social networks designed specifically with the senior citizen in mind.

Genkvetch

This social network for seniors is not only very different from your typical sites, but is also different from other social networks for seniors online. For starters, there are no annoying ads or pop ups on this particular website. Tabs include areas of interest geared towards the concerns of those over the age of fifty, such as health and news that affects this generation. For more information or to sign up, the respective website can be visited at www.genkvetch.com.

Seniorocity

What about www.seniorocity.com? This online community differs from other social networking sites for the older generation in the sense that it is for those 40 and over. The site appears rather jumbled at first, but makes perfect sense. Reviews of medications, health conditions information, weather, and other information is just some of what the user can expect to find. Blogs, polls, and articles are laid out conveniently for ease of access.

Third Age

Www.thridage.com also has similar pages to some of the other popular networking sites for seniors but is set up somewhat differently. As with Genkvetch, the print is larger, easing navigation. This social networking site designed for baby boomers has various categories that the user can choose, including topics such as aging well, relationships and sex, health and wellness, family and friends, life in transition, and travel and past times. Another interesting aspect of this senior networking site is that they also offer up various games to the user.

Growing Bolder

The feel over at Growing Bolder is very unique. This social networking site for senior citizen does have the feel of MySpace or FaceBook, at a more mature level. Much of the content on www.growingbolder.com is provided by the users for the users. Humorous articles, quips, and videos are only a few of the things that the senior can expect to find here. The site also seems to examine the changing of times and other important social issues that may affect today's growing senior population.

AARP

AARP is by far one of the best social networking sites for older people. Useful and very informative information can be found from a well trusted source. The advertisements found aren't your bogus, "you have just won a new tv", but are products that are actually of interest to those in this age group. Couple this with a friendly atmosphere and the AARP community and this is not only a useful site but is user friendly and provides what so many seniors are seeking in an online social networking site. Interested persons can sign up at www.aarp.org.
