This comes from having a fear of someone else's perception of you. Also an individual may anticipate embarrassment, humiliation, or scorned by others in social or performance situations. For example, if you fall in front of another individual you may find yourself laughing with them. As a result you find yourself unconsciously utilizing the defense mechanism known as reaction formation. In this situation you're laughing on the outside but you do that to cover up the humiliation that you just experienced. Most individuals suffering from social phobia also feel that they are being perceived in a negative manner. That being the exact aspect of the phobia is the difficulty that the individual is experiencing when they are concerned about what's preventing them from engaging in common events or attending public places.
I often find myself feeling uncomfortable in public places such as grocery stores and other public places. What the common individual attempts to do is forget about what another person is thinking about them and continue on in whatever that they are doing. But sometimes they find that difficult. Sometimes this phobia is a minor perk or a pet peeve in an individual but sometimes it elevates to the point whereas to prevent them from enjoying everyday life or living comfortable. In a more vague definition it can be the fear of being subject to criticism or to possible scrutiny of others. One more example of the fear would be the fear of eating in front of others in a public place this is often common in individuals.
