While traveling through the desert, across I-25 in New Mexico, my family and I found ourselves in a chance hailstorm. We took refuge at the Santa Fe Diner & Truck Stop in Socorro, New Mexico.

I will be the first to admit, that I was a bit skeptical of the place. From the outside it looked a little unwelcoming, but given the weather, all I really wanted was some place dry and safe to sit for awhile.

We got out of the car and ran through the rain through the doors of the diner, and we were greeted by the friendliest waitress. She made small talk, asked what we wanted to drink, and left us with menus.

One look at the menu and you will know that you are not in an ordinary truck stop. Fresh hummus, stuffed grape leaves, and homemade salsa are a few things you will notice on the menu. A blend of Mediterranean, the Southwest, and general truck stop fare made this diner unique.

Upon overhearing my family talking about the menu choices, the waitress (who also doubled as the cashier in the store area) informed us that the owner of the diner was Mediterranean and that the hummus was freshly made.

My husband and I had to try the salsa. Whenever we see it on the menu, we have to give it a taste test. We have become amateur salsa connoisseurs. The salsa at the Santa Fe Diner was the freshest tomato-herb blend we had ever tasted. It was light, full of flavor, with just a hint of heat.

Since we were at a truck stop, my son knew exactly what he wanted. He ordered eggs sunny side up, potatoes, and sausage. The waitress came back with a generous breakfast plate. The portions were more than enough to feed an ever hungry teenage boy.

The Santa Fe Diner & Truck Stop was a friendly stop in the middle of the desert. Looking around the place, you will see that it is much like a condensed truck stop. It is definitely dusty and even a little dirty around the edges, but do not let that keep you from stopping and having a bite to eat. There is a small store area stocked with various food items, beverages, and necessities. Also, connected to the diner, there is a lounge equipped with a pool table.

No complaints from us at this stop! The coffee was good, there were generous portions for the prices, and the service was exceptional. If you ever find yourself on I-25 near Socorro, New Mexico, take exit 115 and experience it for yourself! For more information, call the Santa Fe Diner & Truck Stop at 505-854-2784.

I used to live in Colorado and made the trip through Albuquerque and Santa Fe on the way the Flagstaff a time or two. I was always a bit "put off" by the appearance of some of those eating places, but never had anything but good food too!
