Software Programs Every Writer Should Own

Great Programs for Every Type of Writer

Ann Mapleridge
Writers have come a long way since pen and paper. The majority of writer's today use a computer to compose their latest masterpiece. Whether you're a screenwriter, blogger, or writing the next great American novel, there is a writing software program out there they can help you meet your goals.

WordPress

WordPress is one of the best software programs out there for blogging. The software is easy-to-use and gives writers the tools necessary to create their own blog, organize posts into topics, and optimize posts they have written for the web. Wordpress offers an online version of their software which includes hosting by Wordpress, as well as downloadable software that can be used with any hosting program and with a person's own URL.

Final Draft

Final Draft is a "must-have" software program for anyone who wants to write screenplays. Final Draft is used by many professionals in the entertainment industry to write TV shows, screenplays, and stage plays. The software offers a variety of keyboard shortcuts for writers that make it easy to write in the correct format. Buck Henry who has worked on movie's such as Get Smart, To Die For, and The Graduate said about Final Draft: "There are two ways to make screenwriting really easy- one: use Final Draft or two: steal the finished screenplay from a dead person and put your name on it. I recommend both. "

Dramatica Pro

Dramatica Pro is a wonderful tool for those who are interested in creative writing, specifically those who are attempting to write full-length books. The software asks you 385 different questions about your characters and story line before you start, and then helps you lay out a map for the story, making the overall process much easier to complete. If you plan on writing a book with a complex storyline, Dramatica Pro can be an invaluable tool in helping to lay that storyline out, and keep characters and plots straight throughout the writing process.

WhiteSmoke's Thesaurus Software

Every writer needs a good thesaurus. In the same way a word processor would give you spelling suggestions for words, WordSmoke Thesaurus points out words in your text that you use often, and offers suggestions on other words you can use to replace them. A great tool to have for anyone who needs to spice up their writing a bit.

Microsoft Word

Definitely an old standby, Microsoft Word is a program every writer should have installed on their computer. Word can be great for writing articles, as well as drafting books and other longer manuscripts.

These are just a few of my favorite programs. What writing programs have you found helpful?
