Solar Garden Light Cleaning Tips and Suggestions

Solar lights for the garden are a highly attractive and eco-friendly way to provide a lighted path through the flower beds of your backyard or up the front walk to your home. The lights are also a great investment because they are relatively low-key in terms of maintenance. In most instances the lights will only require light cleaning for regular care needs.

Frequency of Cleaning for Solar Garden Lights

The frequency of cleaning intervals for solar garden lights can vary depending on where you live. Homes in the southern United States and other regions would require more regular care because of the larger variety and volume of insects ready to decorate the decorative shield of the light. I would recommend the installation of solar garden lights with an easily removable shroud to allow regular dumping of accumulated bug carcasses with a minimum of fuss. Make it a regular habit to dump the garden lights out after every lawn mowing or weed whacking session. If you have an abundance of solar garden lights making a full sweep impossible this frequently, dump out one-third or one-half of the lights each time.

The actual cleaning of the garden lights is a bit more involved than the removal of bugs and would ideally be done every two to four months. Every two months is best in the spring and summer when lawn mowing debris, pollen, and other organic materials are most prevalent. These materials accumulate on the shroud or shield of the solar garden lights and will eventually cause the light to appear dimmer if regular cleaning is not practiced. By cleaning at regular intervals the lights will shine optimally and removing these substances from the garden light will be easier. If you live in area where your solar garden lights can be left out year round, in the winter months cleaning sessions can be spaced up to four months apart.

What to Use to Clean Solar Garden Lights

Many times a light soap and water solution will be all that is needed to get the panel clean, but a household cleaning product designed for windows or mirrors can be used provided your owner's manual for the solar garden lights does not caution against this.

Cleaning Other Solar Garden Light Parts

It is advisable to completely disassemble your solar garden light to the level of assembly you purchased the light at and brush clean every part of the light twice per year. Solar garden lights mounted on poles in patio settings can have their poles cleaned with a pressure washer or a standard garden house when the light and shroud are removed.

Solar garden light cleaning is a relatively simple undertaking that will keep your lights working optimally for seasons to come.
