Solitary Man Movie Review

Mary Finn
Solitary Man is the story of the mid-life crisis from hell. Michael Douglas plays Ben Kalman, a respected businessman whose marriage, morals and business go to hell on a sled as a result of a few words from a doctor: "I'm not loving your EKG."

Fast forward several years and the now ruined protagonist is trying to climb back. Ex-wife, Nancy, (Susan Sarandon) has moved on to a new career as a real-estate hotshot, although she has not changed a stick of furniture in their once-shared nest.

Daughter Jenna Fischer still proves a soft touch for a loan who is torn between her protective husband and her grandpa-infatuated son.

Douglas, once respected philanthropist and now-recovering rogue, finds his entire world torn asunder as a result of an ill-advised college interview trip with his lover's daughter. Jordan, (Mary-Louise Parker) insists that he chaperon the young lass (Imogen Poots) a recovering alcoholic and aspiring Lolita to a college interview at his old alma mater in exchange for taking advantage of her influential connections to buy a dealership in a lucrative market.

Douglas' fears of old-age wreck havoc with morality, decency, commonsense and survival instincts. Comedy and tragedy result from an old lion's attempts to prove that he still can roar. It will take a second encounter with mortality and a welcome hand from college buddy and protector, Danny DeVito, to save his life and restore his sanity.

Solid performances by a first-rate cast. Somewhat predictable story with light comedic overtones. Leave the kids at home. Not just for the R rating, but for a story inexplicable to anyone under 40. If Johnny Cash speaks to you, go. If you think that Michael Douglas is The Man in Black, age a few more years and see it on DVD.

Coming to theaters, May 21, 2010. Directed by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, Produced by Paul Schiff and Steven Soderbergh, Studio: Anchor Bay Films.
