Solutions to 5 Common Exercise Barriers

Amanda Thompson
The majority of Americans know that exercise is good for them, or at least they have heard this statement. The sad reality is that most people who start an exercise program quit within the first six months. There are several barriers that cause people to abandon their work out routine, but for each reason to quit there is a solution that will keep people exercising. Maybe some of these solutions will help you if you are struggling to keep up with your workout routine.

Reason for not working out #1: Medical problems.

Solution: Consult your physician and a fitness professional to develop a routine that is safe and effective for you. Many medical conditions are helped as you become more active, but just make sure you talk to your doctor about which exercises you can complete.

Reason for not working out #2: I got hurt last time I tried.

Solution: Last time you may have done too much, too fast. Talk with your fitness coach about the proper way to execute the exercises and how to progress and a safe rate. Follow the guidelines you receive and do not try to strain your body further than it wants to go.

Reason for not working out #3: I'm too tired.

Solution: Realize that after exercising you will get an energy boost and have more energy than you started with. You may be tired when you start exercising, but you definitely won't be tired when you finish.

Reason for not working out #4: I'm too embarrassed.

Solution: Don't think about what others are thinking about you in the gym, because chances are they aren't thinking about you at all. Most people are too concerned with their own workout to care about what you are doing. Most will also be happy that you are working to improve your health and if you ask they will be willing to give you a hand with machines or exercises you don't understand.

Reason for not working out #5: I don't have time.

Solution: Yes you do. Finding time to exercise is easy if you make it a priority. If it helps, schedule your workout on your calendar like any other meeting. You can also break up 30 minutes a day into three ten-minute bursts if that works better with your schedule. Remember that exercising can be family friendly and as easy as taking a walk after dinner or going biking with your kids.
