Solutions for an Eee PC that Keeps Losing a Wireless Internet Signal

Blair Mathis
One of the frequent problems reported on the Eee PC forum is the sudden loss of a wifi signal. Having had this problem recently on my Eee PC 900A, I've come up with a few different solutions for the problems.

Boot Record Virus

In my case, the wifi signal would be lost no matter the operating system. I would reload the machine and the wifi would work for a hour or two before completely disappearing. It appeared that, in my case, it was a virus on the boot record that caused this. In order to get rid of it, I had to completely wipe the drive with a tool called EraserDisc, which is better than any other formatting program I have used. Where GParted would only erase the partitions, Eraser Disc wiped the entire drive clean.

Be sure to backup your data before proceeding, or you will lose everything.

Bad Card

Sometimes the card goes bad. This could be due to a defective wifi card that came with the machine, or it could be due to come malfunction as a result of user error. For example, if you have modded your Eee PC at any point, the hardware might have been damaged to some degree. If anything has been spilt on the Eee, or if you have allowed it to overheat at any point, the wifi card might be bad.

Bad Drivers

Bad drivers will cause weird things to happen with you wifi. If you've recently reinstalled the machine, or if you have switched to a different operating system (especially to something like Linux), then your drivers might be wonky. Try reinstalling them. You can download drivers for the Eee PC from Asus' official website.

Once you have installed the drivers, restart the laptop and try to reconnect.

Bad Wifi SignalThis might seem obvious, but some people don't consider it until they've drove themselves nuts trying to figure out the solution. If you haven't checked, try connecting to the wifi with a different computer. If you repeatedly lose connectivity, try unplugging your router for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in and reconnecting.
