You will first have to explain to the family that the change will benefit everyone. It is healthier to eat vegetables, fruits, low sugar food and non-processed foods. It not only benefits the person in the family with a health problem but everyone else.
It can be a struggle to make these changes, as you will get constant impulses to go back to your old habits. It can be really hard to go through with this without support and the encouragement, therefore try to think of your family as an organization, where you are in charge. You will have to keep an eye on your children, support them through their ups and downs, set limits, offer praises and encouragement.
When you go shopping avoid aisles that have junk food like cookies, crackers and candy. Make sure that you only go into the aisles that have fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy and whole grain breads. When you put something into your shopping cart consider whether it is a healthy option. An easy way to think about it would be to ask yourself whether the item has any vitamins, minerals, protein or fiber. If you answer no then leave that item in the store.
Try to also cut up fruits and vegetables and put them on a shelf in your refrigerator, this is so it is the first thing your kids see when they are hunting for a snack. Try to give your kids a snack plate for when they are watching television, playing games or doing homework. Include things like carrots, cucumber, baby tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and celery with low fat peanut butter or cream cheese. You can also add some cheese and fruits as well.
A trick with getting your kids to eat their greens at dinner would be to give out salads first when everyone is hungry. If your kids are going to a party, make sure to feed them before they go. This way they will be full and therefore will not eat too much junk food at the party.
Never keep any sweets in the kitchen but rather serve desserts on special occasions. When you keep sweets at home it makes it very easy to snack on them as all they have to do is open the refrigerator. If you don't keep sweets at home, then the kids will have to walk to the shops and it becomes a treat for them.
Make sure that you take your time and small steps when changing your families eating habits. You might have a kid who is a picky eater and it will take a while for him to get used to certain foods. Don't give up because just when you are about to, you may find that your children are about ready to give in.
