Shirley Norling
Summer and camping seem to go hand in hand. Here in Minnesota we have a number of camping opportunities that not only involve a backpack and a tent, but a chance to explore and learn, while still having a lot of fun. Weather it's a 1/2 day camp, or a 1/2 month camp, there are definitely some top-notch camps here in Minnesota that offer us a variety of educational opportunities to partake in during those sometimes, hot and humid Minnesota summer days. Here are 5 of what I consider to be some the best Minnesota educational summer camps.

1. Minnetonka Center for the Arts: This center offers a number of age appropriate summer classes in the various art forms including drawing, sculpture, photography, theatre etc. for boys and girls aged 5-15. Morning and afternoon options are available in many of these summer camp classes. The price is based on type of class as well as the length of the class, most ranging in the price range of $30.00 to $150.00. The camp classes usually run from a 1/2 day session for the younger crowd to a 5 day camp for a teen summer arts camp class. Summer camp begins on Jun.13,2011 and all the information for registration can be found at www.minnetonkaarts.org or call 952-473-7361.

2. Minnesota Zoo Camp: This summer camp is ideal for those little campers aged 4 to kindergarten. Together with MacPhail Center for Music and The Minnesota Zoo, these 4 day afternoon summer camps are available from Jun. to Aug. Children get to explore animal sounds, motions, and habitats through the magic of musical play. Registration began on 2/10/2011 and the cost is $160.00. Register at www.mnzoo.org for this fun-filled animal/music summer camp at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, Mn.

3. Arts on the River Summer Camp: The 9-11 year old campers can partake in this educational summer camp that is held on Jul.5-8, from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. You will be able to play music, bake bread and construct books while exploring the rich culture along the Minneapolis Riverfront district at this summer camp. There will be a new experience everyday at 4 top arts centers that include the Guthrie Theater, Mill City Museum, Mn. Center for Books and Arts, and the McPhail Center for Music. Campers will walk about 3 blocks with camp leaders to each art organization. The cost is approximately $225.00 to $250.00 and you can register at www.mnhs.org/summercamps or call 612-341-7556 for more details.

4. Team Leadership Development Program-LDP: This program will definitely be a rewarding experience for summer campers aged 8th grade to juniors in high school, sponsored in part by the YMCA. Sessions vary from 6 to 19 days at this summer camp near Loretto, Mn., called Camp Ihuhapi. Campers will participate in life changing team building experiences and many leadership opportunities. The time is spent in a wilderness setting, on canoeing or hiking trips. For more information on this unique camping program, call 763-479-1146 or YMCA Camping Services at 612-822-2267.
