Some of the Best Vehicles to Consider for Seniors with Disabilities

Shirley Norling
As we reach that AARP age, a number of issues creep up on us, including our ability to drive safely. There are a number of features that automobile manufacturers are implementing into today's vehicles for safer and happier travels for seniors who may be experiencing some disabilities as they get older.

Some of the issues that many seniors suffer from due to the aging process that could effect their driving ability include stiffness in hands and wrists, back pain and deteriorating eye vision, just to name a few.

To help seniors deal with these aging disabilities many manufacturers have installed parking sensors, back-up cameras, keyless ignition systems, touchscreen controls, adjustable and heated seat controls and power-adjustable lumbar support settings to help make seniors with disabilities driving experiences more comfortable and less stressful, overall. Here are some of the best vehicles with many of those features on the market today.

1. Ford Taurus: Some of the features of this vehicle include parking sensors, spacious cabin to be able to move around more freely, taller seating position as well as adjustable pedals, 8-way heated power driver seat, cruise control and a manual-adjustable lumbar support. All of these features, as well as a number of others help make this vehicle one of the best for seniors with disabilities.

2. Mazada 6: This fairly reasonably priced vehicle has a number of great features for the senior with disabilities. Back-up cameras, parking sensors and a blind spot warning system are some of the great features of the Mazada 6 for seniors who may be dealing with deteriorating vision issues. It helps make driving less stressful, as well as much safer for the senior driver.

3. Toyota Prius: The advanced parking guidance system, touchscreen controls, adaptive cruise control, keyless ignition, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as the lane departure warning system are all very good features of this vehicle that make it one of the best on the road for the senior driver who may be experiencing some disabilities.

4. Volvo XC60: The lane departure warning system, as well as a feature called City Safety is one of the main reasons this vehicle is called one of the best for seniors with driving disabilities, I feel. The City Safety feature can sense imminent collisions and applies the brakes if necessary. It also has adaptive cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and height adjustable 8 way power drive seating.

5. BMW: Luxury, as well as a unlimited safety features make the BMW, one of the best vehicles for seniors who may have disabilities. Front and rear parking sensors, 20-way heated and ventilated height-adjustable power drive seat with power-adjustable lumbar support, memorized settings for 2 drivers and a massage feature are just the start of all the luxury features of this vehicle. Add in the activated navigation system, keyless ignition, lane departure warning system, Bluetooth connectivity and you have one of the best vehicles out there for seniors with disabilities.

6. Lexus LS 460: The tranquil ride that you'll receive with the Lexus LS 460 is just another plus of this excellent vehicle for seniors with driving disabilities. The huge trunk with plenty of room for wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment for individuals with disabilities as well as many other safety and comfort features that include the advanced parking guidance system, voice activated navigation system, and lumbar support definitely make this one of the best vehicles for those seniors who may have disabilities.
