Some Chocolate Bars Are No Longer Suitable for Vegetarians

Various chocolate bars which once were enjoyed and devoured by all, including vegetarians, are no longer animal-product free. Thus vegetarians are no longer able to consume said chocolate bars, such as Mars, Bounty, Snickers, Twix, and Milky Way. Maltesters, and Minstrels are also affected. The recipe change also applies to the popular ice cream versions of the confectionery bars.

Masterfoods, the giant confectionery manufacturer, has decided to no longer use vegetarian whey, and now are using whey that contains rennet, a product extracted from the lining of young calves stomachs.

"Since changing the sourcing of our ingredients, we are no longer able to ensure our chocolate will be animal rennet-free and so we made the principled decision to admit it was not guaranteed to be vegetarian," Masterfoods corporate affairs manager Paul Goalby said. "If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should be fine to enjoy our chocolate."

Products that have a 'best-before' date up to October 1st are not affected by the change and are safe for vegetarian to consume. Any products with dates after October 1st are no longer suitable for vegetarians. Masterfoods is offering a refund on any bar that has a later best-before date to vegetarians.

Needless to say, many vegetarians are unhappy with this decision.

"At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods' decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step," a spokesman from The Vegetarian Society said. "Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves."

"For some incomprehensible reason they are using animal products when all these items have previously been produced using vegetarian alternatives," a spokesman for the Vegetarian Society said. "It is very disappointing that Masterfoods products are no longer vegetarian-friendly. We hope the company will reconsider this move."

The Society is now urging their members who once enjoyed Masterfoods' products to contact Masterfoods directly with their concerns. The number for Masterfoods' customer services department is posted on The Vegetarian Society's website.

There are no signs of Masterfoods backing down due to the complains of the Vegetarian Society and their members. Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods said that the company at least deserves credit for being honest.

I think its the fault of us vegetarians that we have not been able to produce some good chocolates being almost 2 fifth of the world including the Halal consumers.thanks to Masterfoods giving us this chance to do so now.wake up my friends boycott them from now!!! it could be a tactic that they want people to buy their stuff ASAP gain huge profits and then change the plane. also to try and show honesty and advertise this way so people in future blindly trust them without question every thig is possible but trust me they will loose!!!

I am sick of all these chocolate bars using animal extracts. It's totally out of order as unknowingly people have been eating chocolate extracts and that is really bad for those aho are vegetarians due to their religion or halal eaters. these companies make me sick to the back teeth and i think these companies need to pull their socks up. these companies are DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
