Diet aids are some of the most popular over the counter medications sold in America today. People are so desperate for a cure for there obesity that they will try just about anything to get the help they need. With all the different medications and diet aids available, how does the average consumer begin to know what is the right one to choose. First of all, you must make sure that it's FDA approved. There are many diet pills out there that haven't been approved by the FDA and these have the potential to affect your health in negative and sometimes deadly ways. Your safest bet is to stick with only those pills which are prescribed by your physician or a physician who specializes in weight loss.

There are 3 medications which make up the bulk of weight loss medications prescribed by doctors today. The top one on the list of most physicians is Phentermine. This is a drug that is in the class of diet pills that have been proven through tests to reduce appetite and control hunger. They are chemically related to amphetamines and have similar effects on your central nervous system. Which is definitely good in helping reduce your appetite and giving you that extra push to exercise. However you should also be aware that this class of medications have been known to show negative health effects in users over time. Negative effects such as elevated blood pressure and irregular pulse, irritability and insomnia. It is recommended that if you have a history of high blood pressure, or cardiovascular problems, you don't take any weight loss aids which contain Phentermine. Most responsible doctors wont even consider giving You a prescription for these medications if they know of these problems. This product is only approved for short term use. That may mean as little as a few weeks or as much as a couple of months, depending on your doctors observations and orders. Another popular diet aid would be Sibutramine, which is sold under the brand name of Meridia. You might have seen commercials recently about Meredia and its miracle fat reducing properties. Clinical tests have shown that Sibutramine can make you feel full faster which leads you to eat less. The effect of the medication is subtle but can definitely help you with controlling the size of portions that you eat at mealtime. Of course you have to work with the medication and make healthy lifestyle choices. Which in combination will help you in succeeding to take off the weight. As in every medicine this one has also been shown to have side effects in its users. Side effects like constipation, dry mouth, or insomnia. It can also raise your blood pressure so it shouldn't be used by those who already suffer from irregular blood pressure. Always check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss aid.

And last on the top three list is Orlistat, which works by preventing the fat- ingesting enzymes from working in your body at full strength. Orlistat is sold under the prescription name Xenical. This medication sends about 30% of the fat you eat right through your system and doesn't absorb it, which is a great result when you're counting fat and calories. Some great news for dieters is that Orlistat is now available in an over the counter version called ALLI. Again, this drug is not a miracle drug. If you eat to many fat calories, these calories will still be absorbed and Digested by your body. Orlistat does have the potential to have very dramatic side effects. Because of the undigested fat in your system, you may have diarrhea, copious gas, or an urgent uncontrollable need to use the restroom. However, these effects are easy to avoid; just don't eat fatty meals. A fact that can't be stressed enough, is to always remember to consult with your doctor before beginning any weight loss aid. Some other healthy tips to remember is to always take your weight loss slow and expect a reasonable amount of weight to come off over time. Healthy weight loss doesn't involve dropping large amounts of weight over a short time span. A rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week is healthy and reasonable. The gradual accommodation of small changes to your diet and exercise levels will add up with a big loss over time.
