Some Common Problems in Pregnancy

Hormonal changes and the strain of a heavier body may bring some discomforts. Fortunately, most of these complaints can be easily treated. However, certain problems may be serious. An example is vaginal bleeding which needs immediate medical attention.

Some of the common complaints that may face are morning sickness. This can strike at any time of the day but more so in the morning, making you nervous or vomit. Eating a few dry biscuits or toast before you get out of bed can relieve morning sickness if it happens in the morning. The trick is not to go hungry because it worsens queasiness.

Poor posture, high heels and excessive weight gain are some culprits of backache. Sit or lie down as much as possible. Mothers are encouraged to do some back strengthening exercise.

As your digestive system become sluggish, constipation may set in. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of high fiber foods like fruits, vegetables and grains. Do not take laxatives without consulting your doctor.

Muscular cramps in the thighs, calves and feet are common in the later stage of pregnancy. Massage may help the mother to feel comfortable. Your doctor may also prescribe calcium supplements if your blood calcium level is low.

Insomnia is often caused by the need to urinate often in the night, a very active baby or simply being unable to get into a comfortable position. Try to relax before bedtime. A cup of warm milk or chamomile tea might help.

Fatigue is also a common problem in pregnancy. During the first trimester, you will feel constantly tired and would even drop off to sleep by early evening. This is due to your raging hormones. Try to slow down and have sufficient rest and sleep. By the second trimester, you should have recovered you energy. If not, you could be anemic. Let your doctor know and he may prescribe iron supplements.

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the throat, chest or stomach. It can occur during early pregnancy due to hormonal changes. A glass of milk before bed may help. Some foods like fried and spicy ones caused indigestion. Avoid them and have smaller but more frequent meals. Other ways to help ease heartburn or indigestion include sitting up while eating, drinking liquids between meals and waiting an hour after meals before lying down.
