Some Drawbacks of Purchasing a Custom Home

A custom home is a home that either you design and build yourself, or a home, which was built by a homebuilder and was customized to your own personal specifications. Custom homes are more tailored to your personal tastes and likes, and while this might seem like a positive, there are some real drawbacks to purchasing a custom home. In this article we will take a look at some of the drawbacks and the issues, which are posed by them.

One of the primary drawbacks to a custom home is the expense. Weather you build the home yourself, by hiring the architect and builder directly, or if you provide customized specifications directly to an established home builder working in a new development, expect to pay for the privilege of customizing the home. If you are buying a home from someone who previously built it as a custom home, then you should also expect to pay more, as often custom homes feature upgraded appliances and luxury items which the original homeowner will be looking to recoup the cost from.

A custom home might be more difficult to sell later on. By the very definition, the home is custom, or not standard. There might be quirks to the design that you may love or have specified, but the majority of the house buying public doesn't like or want. Style and taste are both very much personal decisions, and to the extent that the homes style or design is different than mainstream design, you will limit the potential pool of possible candidates who may be interested in purchasing the home in the future.

Custom homes can often look out of place in already established neighborhoods. A classic glaring example of this is if someone were to build a log cabin type home in a neighborhood of older ranch homes. The character of the home, while custom, wont necessarily mesh with the existing homes in the neighborhood and can stick out like a sore thumb.

Purchasing a custom home is not the most environmentally friendly option. With the current glut of houses on the market, it just does not make good environmental sense to purchase a custom home when so many perfectly good older already existing homes go wanting on the market. The resources, which would normally go into a custom home, can better be utilized for other purposes.

Lastly custom home purchases tend to be more stressful than purchasing an existing home. It doesn't matter if you are building the custom home yourself (which is absolutely stressful) or if you are buying your custom home from an already established builder, you can expect to have a higher stress level. Weather the stress comes from dealing with the pressures of construction, or from obsessing over details with your builder; it still presents a major drawback.

While custom homes have definite advantages, it is definitely worth thinking about some of the potential pitfalls, before your purchase.
