Some Dreams Linger

Adam Willard
When your head falls, softly against the pillow
You may fight, troubled by reality
Or you may give in, for better things to come
But it captures you
As waking thoughts turn to living dreams

Dreams at once wondrous and surreal
Or terrible, attempts to flee
Knowing things that are not seen
And seeing things that you've never known
Or what once you knew, familiar, now has changed, but is still the same

Your dreams wrap you up in a reality all their own
Until consciousness returns
Some dreams linger
You knew it was real, it happened!
But it's not. The waking world around you doesn't agree

Reality has once again taken hold of you
You may be glad, things aren't so bad as you imagined
Or you may not, they're much worse
But reality is all you've got
Dreams that linger have no place here

Well tonight, I dreamt of you
A dream sweet and precious
Of all the things we used to do
I dreamt you were mine, and I was yours
And it was only us, with no one to disagree

I woke from that dream, beautiful and real
To a dark, cold night, reality
Swift panic clutching, "Where am I?"
"It must've been, it must be!"
While the dark whispers softly in my ear, "it's not."

If I just close my eyes, will you not return?
I'd rather dream than think of losing you
Images return, fleeting
But I can't touch you, you're gone, it's over.
There's only one world I can live in

Yet this dream keeps protruding upon it
Waking thoughts turn to dreams of you
"Where am I? What is real?"
Is it cold, dark facts or joy and love of you?
Somewhere I'm trapped, lost in between

Though I wake, though I dream, I'm not here nor there
Some dreams linger
A truth that reality can't stamp out
Though waking, breathing, living, I'm living for a dream
And until I touch you, I'm caught somewhere in between
