Some Frightening Information About Illegal Drugs

Cathy Pelekakis
In todays society many people whether they are young or old use drugs. Some people feel that they need drugs to help them cope with reality, to make themselves feel good, or as a crutch in order to face their problems. Drugs change the way your body works. The use of drugs whether they are prescribed or illegal may effect the way you perform at work, how you interact with your family and friends. Unfortunately drugs may cause death. Here are some tips that I would like to pass on.

Cocaine and Crack Immediate effect lasts only 5 - 20 minutes. Afterwards the people who have taken this drug may feel that they are crashing. Cocaine and crack can be additctive.

Inhalants include solvents, aerosols and glues, effects that these drugs may have on a person include headaches, hallucinations, bladder and bowel control problems. Inhalants may cause brain damage.

Heroin and other narcotics..a person who uses herion may become addicted very quickly. Withdrawal symptons include vomiting, cramping and shaking.

Hallucinogens, commonly known as acid, angel dust, magic mushrooms. Almost all the folks that take these drugs react differently, some may experience panic, confusion, paranoia and anxiety

Depressants include alcohol, downers benzos. Depressants are drugs that are used to slow down the nervous system. Common depressants include alcohol, Valium(r) and Xanax(R). Mixing alcohol and other depressants may lead to a coma or even death

Rohypnol is the chemical name for the rape drug. The Rape drug is a depressant that may be slipped into someones drink.

If you find that a loved one is involved with drugs communicate with them, you can call the National Institute on Drug abuse at 1-800-662-4357 or visit http://www.drugabuse.org. There are 12 step programs available for the person who is addicted. Narcotics Anonymous can be found at http://www.na.org

As a product of the hippie generation, and a child of the 80's, I've seen so much drug and alcohol abuse. Many good people have had their lives destroyed due to addiction. My brother is the most recent example in my life. Thanks for this informative article.

And, there is a 12-step program for people involved with people on drugs ... I think it is called Narc-anon. You would most probably find a link to this group at na.org.

So important to have regular parent/child talks about this and the information you give here is an excellent discussion piece! It may seem uncomfortable to bring this stuff up BUT it is even more uncomfortable dealing with the fallout of avoiding it. Kids can either talk to their parents or their peers ...

I am going to print this off and give it to my step-daughter to take to college with her (after we look it over together.)

    Thanks! Viveca
