Dinner Time
Make it custom to have dinner together at the dinner table. Set the table inviting and pretty. Now here comes the important part. Dinner time is time to have attention for each other. No cell phones. No TV. No reading books, magazines or newspapers. And finally, no conflicts. Talk about what happened that day. Share your thoughts on current events.
Once dinner is finished, clean the table together. Let the kids put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Give them little responsibilities when helping you. Make cleaning up a family activity.
Homework Time
Usually kids go to their rooms to make their homework. Why not let them make their homework in the living room? Make sure they are not distracted. So don't switch on the TV the moment you sit down. Don't be on the phone for an hour. Read the newspaper or a book. If necessary be there for your children to help them with something they don't understand. Again, share this time together as a family.
Game Time
Computers and gaming consoles have changed the way children play games indoors. They can sit hours in front of the screen without communicating with the real world. This is not all bad because there are some good educational games. But for the sake of spending time together just switch of the computer and 'switch on' a good board game. Depending on the age of your children these can be simple fun games or exciting difficult games. The main part here is that you are playing together and have fun as a family. Or how about a big jigsaw puzzle to work on with the whole family?
Movie Time
There are many good family movies. Buy one, rent one or take one from your collection and organize a family movie evening. Do this on a Friday or a Saturday so you can be easy on your children's bedtime. Make some popcorn. Create the real cinema atmosphere.
These are just some basic ideas to get you going. You don't have to be a genius to come up with more ideas for family activities. Some ideas require you to do things together, other ideas just let you be together. And that's the important issue here. Just being together as a family.
