Shirley Norling
Most of us across the big, beautiful U.S.A. enjoy having a little music in our lives. Weather it's country, gospel, rock or something in between, Americans love their music. There are a number of cities throughout the U.S. that are known for having good music. Here is a list of cities in the U.S. that have some of the best music to offer.

1. Nashville: By far, Nashville is one of my favorite cities to enjoy some good old country music. In recent years, the music genre in Nashville has expanded somewhat, so now people of all ages come and visit Nashville to enjoy a variety of music venues. The Grand Ole Opry is still one of the biggest attractions that draw music fans from across the U.S. The Opryland Hotel is my favorite to place to stay in Nashville, but there are many, many lodging options available their. Nashville is a nice place to visit anytime of the year, but Christmas is my favorite time of the year to go there and see all the gorgeous Country Christmas decorations.

2. Austin, Texas: Any type of music, any venue, any day, that's what the music fan will find in Austin, and that's why it's one of the best music cities in the U.S., I feel. Janis Joplin launched her act at Threadgill's in Austin back in 1962, which first started out as a Gulf Gas Station in 1933, and later became a real roadhouse back in 1962. It still stands today and is a great place to eat. In addition to being a great music city, Austin is a great city for sightseeing. Hiking and biking along the Colorado River section that runs through downtown Austin is a visitor favorite.

3. Washington D.C.: Spring and summer is probably the best time to visit this historic, yet music filled city with the Cherry Blossom Festival being one of the biggest tourist attractions at that time of the year. The famous Smithsonian spotlights music in the summer with its free Folklife Festival. At the Atlas Performing Arts Center, the music fan will enjoy everything from classical concerts to modern dance. There are a number of accommodation options in Washington D.C. , where one can enjoy a great, musical, cultural getaway.

4. Houston, Texas: Houston ranks #5 in classical music, thanks to the Houston Symphony and acclaimed Houston Grand Opera. This Texas city is full of museums, fine restaurants and creative arts for the music lover to enjoy. The Hotel Derek was picked as a favorite hotel to stay by Travel and Leisure, but numerous other hotels, B&B's etc. are available throughout this 4th largest city in the U.S.

5. New York City: The Big Apple offers it all to the music lover. From the days of Tin Pan Alley at the onset of the 20th century to today with more forms of music than any other American city, New York City has it all. Weather it's disco, punk, folk or jazz music, the music fan will surely find a venue that pleases them in NYC. Along with everything else New York City has to offer, it's truly one of the best music cities in the U.S.

6. San Francisco: The Haight-Asbury neighborhood could be the perfect spot for some fun summertime music performances. It still has a unique cultural affect even after 40 years with it's somewhat hippie atmosphere. The city was a hotbed for some of the most famous bands including Jefferson Airplane and Credence Clearwater Revival, that us baby boomers will surely remember. There is no lack of various lodging options in the San Francisco area for music fans.

7. New Orleans: Nothing spells music like New Orleans as being one the best music cities in the U.S. Jazz and other musical festivals abound in New Orleans, and who hasn't heard about Mardi Gras, a music lovers dream. It's great music, great food and great attractions in New Orleans, one of America's most authentic cities.

8. Atlantic City: The famous Boardwalk in Atlantic City is a mecca for good music and music concerts. The Boardwalk has played host to star studded entertainment for over 80 years. Some of the upcoming music events in Atlantic City for the music fan include, The Mother's Day Music Festival, Bob Seager & The Silver Bullet Band, New Kids on the Block and The Backstreet Boys as well as Usher. Atlantic City has always been a favorite destination for tourists, as well as music lovers.

9. Las Vegas: The entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas has every music venue any music fan could possibly want. Weather its Celine Dione or Donnie & Marie, hundreds of musical entertainers abound in this city that never sleeps. The best of the best flock to Las Vegas to entertain music lovers from all over the world. There definitely is more in Las Vegas today then playing slot machine and craps. Today, it's considered to be one of the best music cities in the U.S.

10. Boston: Home of the famous Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston has music events galore to offer music fans. The gospel festival Caliente, a celebration of Latin Music on Jul.30, Boston Urban Music Festival on Aug.6, and MLK-a gift of song every Jan. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King are just a few of the many music events that draw music fans to Boston. This city is known for its cultural facilities, world class educational institutes and it's a forefront of American history, in addition to a city for great music. It can host and entertain visitors like no other city can.
