Some Ideas for Getting a Raise

Articles
Getting a raise isn't so much about negotiation as it is about raising one's own level of performance. The majority of managers are aware of the performance level of their employees. They are already more likely to reward and promote those who they feel are putting out the most effort and creating results. Therefore, the best thing you can do to get a raise is to improve your level of performance.

If you feel that you are performing at your highest level than you can focus on negotiating a raise with your boss. Simply find a time when your boss is open to your suggestions. Then simply tell them what is on your mind. Don't beat around the bush. Be candid about what your needs are in a tactful way. If your boss is professional he/she will respond in a professional manner. If they do intend to give you raise an you have succeeded.

If your boss refuses to give you a raise and this is where you can use your negotiating skills to press further. Ask your boss watching you to do in order to receive a higher income. You can use this information to your advantage. If you feel that you're already doing what your boss requires for a raise then you can point out to him/her in a detailed fashion how you have been completing those tasks. If you and your boss are still at an impasse after this discussion then come back in a later date and see if there has been a change of mind.

If someone else in your workgroup is getting a raise determine what they are doing to get it. This is another clue on what it takes to get increased rewards. Likewise, look at the people who are not getting raises and avoid doing what they're doing. Follow this plan and occasionally report your boss and your performance level and bring up your desire for a raise again. Remember, you have many alternatives. You're not stuck at this job. You have other options. If you feel deep down that you're not getting adequate compensation for your work then you can focus on finding a job elsewhere.

Better yet, you can start your own business if you feel that your ideas and talents are worth big bucks. This way you can test your belief in the value of your services against the reality of the free marketplace. You can be your own boss and set your own wages.
