The State of Texas is a beautiful state and is well known for its cowboys, famous BBQ and all of its captivating and beautiful land. However, it is also known for hunting and is the perfect place to go if you are a hunter. Texas has a variety of trophy animals for you to hunt, but did you know some of the largest Feral Hogs are in Texas?

Ranchers in Texas began to build high fenced hunting ranches 50-60 years ago for the purpose of saving animals that were becoming extinct and raising trophy animals to hunt. With thousands of high fenced ranches in Texas, exotic ranch owners brought a variety of species to hunt, including the Russian Boar. This extremely fierce animal was imported and raised as a trophy animal 25-30 years ago for hunting and as a meat hog, so hunters would have the opportunity to hunt top of the game animals.

Due to the negligence of some of the ranch hands and extreme weather conditions and/or natural disasters, such as floods, tornadoes and falling trees, the fences were knocked down allowing some of the Russian Boars to escape and meander about as they looked for shelter, food and mates. They roamed around to other farms that had domesticated hogs and broke into the pens killing the male boars and taking the female hogs with them. The Russian Boar crossbred with domesticated female hogs and had offspring together.

Some of the largest feral hogs in the world can be found in Texas, weighing 900 pounds and more. These animals continue to multiply and increase in number and size. There are over five million of these animals now roaming in the Texas Hill Country, Northern and Southern Plains and East Texas Big Thickets where they are plentiful.

Hunting feral hogs in Texas is year round and any weapon of choice is permitted day and night, with no special licenses required to hunt them. There are many ranches to choose from that have an enormous amount of these trophy animals to hunt. Flowers R&R Ranch is one of them.
