Pain is the body's way of warning you that something is wrong. Not too many of us enjoy having pain and some tolerate it better than others. It is much better to feel the pain and know that you have something wrong than to not feel it.
There is s rare condition where people feel no pain on their skin. They are always in danger of hurting themselves seriously. For example, if you rest your hand on a hot stove and feel no pain, you would probably be seriously burned before you realized it.
A lot of diabetics lose a limb because the nerves are damaged in their legs by the disease affecting their nerves. They may step on something and not realize it because there is no pain to alert them. A serious infection could then set in.
Sometimes we can cause more problems because we try to avoid pain. Like going to the dentist or having minor surgery. Having a tooth extracted or having an operation are well recognized causes of pain, but there are some causes of pain that you may not be readily aware of. According to WebMD, here are a few things that may cause pain that you may not be aware of:
Flip flops or sandals: Any type of shoes with a foam sole that are flat don't offer any kind of arch support. If you wear them a lot, you may get pain in your feet and ankles. I once saw a girl down by the college walking to school in flip flops. Imagine walking several miles in them. You might as well be wearing high heels on a hike.
Texting: Most people know that a repetitive motion like typing or working on an assembly line can cause carpel tunnel syndrome. Carpel tunnel syndrome is a narrowing and inflammation of a tunnel in the wrist where a nerve goes through. This can cause pressure on the nerve, resulting in numbness and pain.
But not too many people may realize that using a phone to text someone can cause pain in your thumbs. This can ultimately result in arthritis. Doctors are now seeing arthritis in the hands of people as young as 30 because of typing text on their cellphones.
Your wallet: Carrying a fat wallet may be good for your finances, but it can also put pressure on the sciatic nerve in your leg and cause pain. It can even put you back out of alignment and cause muscle strain.
Driving: if you don't have your seat aligned properly, you may hunch forward causing yourself back pain. You also put yourself at greater risk of being harmed if your air bag goes off.
Aged cheese: Aged cheeses contain a chemical that triggers headaches in a lot of people. You may want to keep track of the types of foods that may cause you to get a headache.
Carrying a briefcase or a laptop: All that weight on one arm can cause your back muscles to ache from the strain.
Hairdos: Wearing a tight ponytail or dreads can cause a headache. Relax it a bit.
Sleeping: If you sleep on your stomach, you may even twist your neck enough to cause high blood pressure. Those who sleep in their side with their arm elevated over their head may get shoulder strain.
With a little common sense you can avoid a lot of these pain triggers. Remember, pain is your body telling you that something is wrong. Listen to it.
