Some Pros and Cons of Power Windows in a Project Car

Mich Butler
When you are looking for a project car there are some things that you can easily forget about. You can easily forget about looking at the windows, if you spot that good looking 63 Buick Riviera with bad paint, or that 52 Chevrolet that calls out your name.

One thing you should always think about before buying a project car is the windows. I am not talking about them being complete or really hard to replace if they chip, I mean power windows, or cranks. Normally you would think a power windowed vehicle would be much more desirable then a crank, and yes that is correct but only if the windows work properly. There are too many parts in a power window that can break making them not good choice for a project car. Even if they work now there is no guarantee that they will continue to work in the future. In fact if something goes horribly wrong the mechanism can continually push against the top of the door and crack or break the window. Also it is more likely that they will malfunction in the middle of a rain storm and be caught halfway down which is a horrible experience if you are far away from home.

Crank windows are a much simpler choice then power window and they can be easier to fix then power windows when something goes wrong. Also your arm does not need electric power to operate which means you can crank down your window if your car battery is not charged, you lose your key, or you are waiting for your significant other to get out of the store of their choosing. Also crank windows can accidentally stuck on so that they very slowly drain the battery of the car.

However, it would be an injustice to leave out the good parts of having power windows and the bad parts of having a crank.

The best part about having power windows is the cool look you will have with them. You can drive up to your girl and power the window down to say hi instead cranking and wheezing as you roll down the window to pick up your date. Unless of course she has a great sense of humor and you know how to make her laugh with it. Also Crank windows do have the chance to slip off track which can sometimes be easily fixed just by pulling it around and getting it in just the right spot. Other times it takes a whole lot of work just to get it to move up and down again.
