Some Quick Door Fixes

Kevin Flynn
Most homeowners have come across a door that just won't work correctly. Perhaps is sticks, or squeaks, or opens on its own. Fortunately there are simple fixes that you can do yourself. The squeaky door

So you have a door that creaks and squeaks when you open and close it. That's great during Halloween but annoying the rest of the year. For a quick fix, grab some WD40 and spray some onto the hinge and then open and close the door a few times. Be sure to have a towel ready to wipe up any excess WD40. This wors well but the fix won't last forever. For a more permanent fix, use a hammer and screw driver to bang out the hinge pin and then coat the hinge with grease. Then re insert the hinge pin. A door that won't stay closed

If your door won't stay closed due to the lock not sitting correctly, first take a look at the lock. Is it sitting high on the striker plate or low? If it's high, unscrew the top hinge of the door and place a piece of cardboard under the hinge. Next screw the hinge back in place. This should lower the lock. You may need to put more then one shim in so take your time and with a little trial and error, you should be good to go.A door that won't open

So you have a door that just won't open. You need to pull the handle harder to free it from the jam. The most common cause is due to home settling or a build up of paint. Either way, there is an easy fix. Take some carbon paper and tape it to the area of the door that is sticking. Next close the door and then open it. Repeat the process a few time and the carbon paper will smudge on the area that is sticking. Once you know where the door is sticking, take some sand paper and correct the problem.A door that always closes

Some doors just won't stay open. If the door lock sits firmly in the strike plate, then take your hammer and screwdriver and tap out one of the hinge pins. Now put the pin on a hard surface like a garage floor and give it a tap with the hammer. This will put a slight bend in the pin. When you re install the pin the bend will create some additional friction and help tame your swinging door.
