Some Thoughts on Copywriting

Emma Jacobs
We have all, at different times in our life been in a position of being unable to express what we want, be it in a simple letter, or in a conversation. Many famous writers have also faced this problem even at the peak of their careers. We are therefore not unique, but in august company. Trainers and educators say that the best method of learning is by "on the job" training.

The best method of learning to write is also by trying to express yourself on paper. When you write the words will automatically follow. Do not expect that your first draft will be acceptable to you. Do not be discouraged. You will learn as you go along. There are some fortunate "born" writers who are busy in producing hugely successful novels. However, they do not waste time in writing copy.

Copywriters evolve by practice, learning the hard way. Whenever faced with the task of writing a letter or for that matter any written communication, go about it systematically. What is your ultimate aim in writing? At whom is the matter targeted? Will a feedback form help? If so, enclose a self-stamped reply envelope. Keep the communication brief. Many people are put off by lengthy documents and may not even read them to the end. In this case, the very purpose of the communication is defeated. It is also advisable to write the same document in different formats. Send this to different properly designated target groups. Keep track of the responses from the groups. See which of the documents have had the best responses. If a poor response is obtained, is it because the communication is not in the proper format? If the groups to whom you send the communication are not too different, it is possible that the communication was not properly designed. Try improving this and send it to those people with whom you have not communicated earlier to test the effectiveness of the communication.

Analyze the effectiveness of the document and why it works better. Do not discard any of the formats. One never knows when they will be apt for a different purpose. Above all, keep records of the letters that work and those that don't. This will aid in the learning process. You can always keep trying to copy successful people.

However, remember that nothing works better than the original. Keep improvising. So the formula for success is try something new, assess the methods, modify, and keep adjusting to the needs. Writing an article is more challenging. If you are doing this for the first time, keep a well-written article in front of you when you write. Try to word the article in your language, without changing the essence. Try to add your own inputs. A little time spent in getting ideas from similar articles is time well spent.

Remember that you may have those days when you have run out of creative ideas. In this case, sit back and relax until the creative juices start flowing again. If you are able to produce an article that is original and unique, it will go a long way in boosting your confidence and giving you the satisfaction of having done a good job.
