Some Tips for Budgeting for the Holidays

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
During these tough times, there are plenty of people that need to curb expenses. Depending on where you live in the country, it may be worse than other places. Not having a job or having a lower income than you normally do can make the holidays seem bleak. How will you buy gifts? How will you afford all the festivities? Well, here are some tips to help you get through with the least amount of pain.

There are ways to cut expenses. The first thing to do is to make out a budget. Write down all of your bills and make sure that you know where they are going. You want to keep track of where all of your money is going. This is not easy to do, so if you need help ask someone that is good at doing this for others. It may be a friend or a family member that can give you some really good input.

Then you need to make your priorities. Of course, family is important, so other events should be put on hold for the year. Save money by turning down other expensive outings, which there can be a lot of at the holidays.

Use your money wisely for family events. Do one or a couple, depending on what you can afford. Explain to other people that you have budget constraints this year and you can't possibly do everything.

Shopping online can save you money in gas, so consider using the internet to purchase your gifts. Always look for bargains, so that you will be able to as much as possible.

If you have a large amount of people that you send Christmas cards to, you may wish to hand deliver as many of them as possible to save on postage.

Use your time wisely. Make gifts if you can, as well as decorations. If you are the one throwing a big party, ask others to bring a dish to cut down on expenses.

Going out all the time is not a necessity during the holidays. Look for things in your area that might be free or very inexpensive. For a free outing take a drive to see how your neighbors decorated their homes. When you feel that an outing is overpriced, it most likely is, so cancel it.

During the holidays when you are having tough times, keep a positive attitude. Take every day as it comes and use the tips above and you will get through it. You will have a fun and enjoyable time no matter how much money you have when you follow the tips above. Make sure that you tell others how much you love them and they will show you that in return and that will make your holidays so wonderful.
