1. Take a multivitamin/multimineral supplement each day. Stick with supplements that are in the 100% RDA allowance range. Taking overdoses of certain nutrients may hinder one's health.
2. Take a calcium supplement each day if you are not getting enough calcium from normal diet alone.
3. Take a fish oil supplement each day. The omega-3 fatty acids may improve your cardiovascular system.
4. Have easy access to water so you can take a drink whenever you are thirsty. The body is mostly comprised of water and needs an adequate supply of water for top function.
5. Eat foods with a dense protein supply such as beef, chicken, or fish. Protein is an instant source of energy.
6. Include an adequate amount of fiber in your diet. It leaves you feeling more full and helps move the digestive system along.
Getting the right carbohydrates in the diet:
I'm not a doctor nor licensed nutritionist. However, I have studied nutrition in college and I have read a few good books on the topic. The mainstream of concept of a low-carb diet is unhealthy. Obviously, cutting out fruits and replacing them with bacon or fatty dairy products is not the best health choice. This unfortunately, is a path that many went down when the low-carb craze hit. This is also likely a contributor to the death of its well-known advertiser Dr. Atkins himself.
Focusing primarily on one factor of the diet such as carbohydrates is dangerous. Dieting is not that simple nor that complex. It appears that eating the right kind of carbohydrates is a step in a better direction. People should eat whole grain wheats instead of refined white bread. Carbohydrates which Spike one's insulin level and later create a lull in energy are what to be avoided. Natural carbohydrate sources such as whole fruits should be taken in place of processed fruit juice. Carbohydrates especially complex carbohydrates are necessary for a healthful diet.
One thing that trumps all diets is the factor of exercise. My doctor told me that if all people just exercised many doctors would be out of work. Therefore, one should incorporate a paced exercise routine with a diet that contains enough natural complex carbohydrates and a reduction in processed carbohydrates such as corn syrup and refined breads. Also some doctors feel that white potatoes should be included in the category of foods that have an unhealthy impact on blood sugar levels.
