Somebody is Hurting Me

Ed Robbins
Somebody is hurting me
Day in and day out
Pushing me around
Confusing me with doubt

Takes away my chances
'More a dunce than a fool
Crushing my endeavors
Braying like a mule.

If I live a thousand years
And all of them for naught
A little peace and normalcy
For anything I've got

I knew a love existed once
As bright and clean and true
There's nothing but confusion now
Distracting through and through

Upon a time I once did choose
The path I've ambled down
Lost among the thickets now
I cannot hear a sound

'Chose my words so carefully
Not wanting to offend
Yet patience lost brings such a cost
Fold up and start again

I'm told that life is horrible
There's nothing to expect
Sadness, mediocrity
Fault and disrespect.

To fear ourselves and what we think
The pond'rous man is cursed
Flung aside with jealous pride
He's nothing to converse

Pushing up the weight of sin
Depression takes its toll
He's tired now and can't say how
The space eclipsed his soul

Tho' tidings that lead us astray
Never can suffice
To lead us back to heaven's shore
Or help us pay the price

Returning always time again
We've been around the block
We've heard the echoes whispers too
And virtue's state of shock

So much good can come of this
Yet so much bad we've seen
We don't protect our souls inside
Or keep our spirits clean

Now slavery's yoke is strapped again
Upon my battered frame
Succumbing to the heat and dust
The weariness and shame

I'll yearn for peace in heaven
The safety of our soul
The Hand of God protect my heart
The quiet river's shoal.
