Co-writer and lead singer Brandon Flowers said this song was the most Las Vegas influenced song they wrote, as the band resides from that city. The album was released on March 15, 2004, while the song was released on January 10, 2005.
As stated earlier, this song was released three different times. The first was in the UK on a CD. It was also released as a seven inch vinyl with different songs. Then, it was re-released in the UK later on two different CD's. One of these CD's had four different versions of Somebody Told Me - the original, the Mylo Mix, the King Unique Vocal Mix, and the U-MYX. It was also released on a twelve inch vinyl, in which two different versions - the Mylo Mix and The Glimmers GypoRock Mix.
Finally, the song was released in the United States. This was released in a few versions - the Josh Harris Club, the Josh Harris Dub, the King Unique Mix, and the King Unique's Dub. Overall, there are eight official versions of this song. The official version of this song on the album is 3:17 long.
The music video for this song was directed by Brett Simon. This is a very basic video - it shows The Killers performing the song during the night in a desert. There is a large screen behind then, flashing and scrolling their logo and showing other versions of them performing, appearing to be in the same location. The Killers received their name from the fictional band mentioned in the video Crystal by New Order. The music video for Crystal is very similar to the video for Somebody Told Me, something that many state could be a homage to the creators of their name.
Despite being The Killers first song released, they fared very well in the charts. They reached number three in US Modern Rock, and did well worldwide, too. They got up to sixth in the Danish Charts, seventh in the Taiwan Charts, ninth in the Irish Charts, thirteenth in the New Zealand Charts, sixteenth in the Swiss Charts, twenty-seventh in the French Charts, and thirty-first in the Italian Charts.
This song is also inspiration to may parodies. Weird Al Yankovic has done a spoof of this song, and a parody has also been done by ApologetiX. The Arctic Monkeys have also remixed this song, changing some of the lyrics.
