Sometimes it is Okay to Go Cheap

JENNIFER LUING SCHAFER
It is not new news that people are forced to cut their budgets in this wretched economy. Family entertainment is usually the first to go in a family's budget. You can still have fun and not drain your family's savings.

Bowling has been a family activity for years and years. Bowling provides so many benefits that people don't realize. It is great family fun that all can participate. Bowling provides great exercise. You don't realize you are exercising due to you are having too much fun. Everyone learns a life skill; the art of teamwork. It is one of the cheapest activities a family can do today. Many bowling alleys will have coupons for free games on your next visit or partner with local businesses; that is an added bonus.

A local museum is another activity you can do with your children. Many museums admission is free or a low cost. You will be pleasantly surprised how enjoyable a visit museum can be. I suggest calling the museum first to check on admission prices.

If you and your family like to do things outside; we all know that depends on the weather. I have a winter option and an option for the rest of the seasons.

Winter is great in the aspect it brings snow. Snow brings tons of opportunities to have fun. If there is an ample amount to the white stuff covering the ground and the weather is not too bitterly cold go outside! Enjoy the weather; living in the Midwest I know nice winter days are few and far between. Go outside and just be a kid again with your children. Go sledding, build snowmen, forts, have a snowball fight, or build that snow angel! Be a kid! Let your children know that you are more than their mom; you were once a kid; that you can have fun with them; just not be the one who disciplines them.

The other seasons when there is not the white stuff on the ground take advantage of what Mother Nature is giving you. Go to state parks, campgrounds and other places outside. If you camp, go camping! I guarantee that your family will have many fond memories of camping. If you can't go to the campgrounds, camp in your backyard!

Family entertainment does not have to be something big all the time. The point of it all is to have fun and make many memories. There are plenty of other resources out there; you just need to be creative.
