Shortly after video games were being made came video game movies, or movies based on video games. Video games have become a way of life for our generation as well as movies. So it is obvious that directors would think that movies based on video games would be successful. Although there are a few video game movies that are good, most seem to fall short of expectations. Some things should just remain in the video game world and out of Hollywood. So here's a list of what I think are the worst movies based on video games:
The Ten Worst Video Game Movies
10. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
The most successful video game heroin, Lara Croft made its way into the cinemas with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001. Having loved the Lara Croft series since it was released on PS2, I was sure that it would make a good movie. Angelina Jolie was a perfect fit for Lara, but the movie's plot was terrible. Basically the plot is, Lara Croft, played by Jolie, is in search of an artifact that can control time. The movie has some interesting action scenes and Jolie carries the role of Lara Croft well but with its senseless plot, it has made my list as one of the worst video game movies.
9. Doom
Doom, one of the most popular video games of all time, a game that revolutionized first person shooters, and also one of the most controversial video games ever was made into a movie in 2005. Staring The Rock as Sarge, this movie is full of action, blowing things up and killing things. The plot is about a group of soldiers sent to Mars to contain a lab and all of a sudden there is a monster attack. Although the actions scenes are good, the dialogue is terrible and the plot is bad. The Rock does a decent job, and there is one notable sequence where it takes on a first person perspective to sort of mimic the game. But overall with the bad acting and dialogue, and the terrible plot, this movie earns its spot as one of the worst video game movies ever.
8. Double Dragon
Many of you may not have ever even seen this movie or even know there is a Double Dragon movie. The actors were subpar. The plot of the movie did not follow the plot of the game at all. The plot of the game was simple; two brothers' girlfriends get kidnapped. The movie had nothing to do with this at all. Not to mention one of the brothers was white and the other was Asian. This movie is suited for the younger audience as it has weird monsters, overstated explosions, and moral lessons. But with the terrible acting, bad screenplay, and ridiculous plot, this movie easily made the list as one of the worst video game movies ever.
7. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Destroy All Expectations... that's what this movie did. With the semi-success of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation had high hopes of being a pretty good movie, yet the movie fell far short of expectations. The special effects were very bad. Sonya Blade was played by some older lady. The acting was not good. The combat scenes are not realistically pieced together. It featured very few stunts. The background techno music is probably the best thing this movie has to offer. Overall this movie is barely watchable so it's earned its spot on my list.
6. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
Street Fighter was one of the most enjoyable games to play in its time along with its counterpart Mortal Kombat. With the release of Street Fighter II shortly came the movie Street Fighter (based off Street Fighter II). It's obvious that the creators of the movie had no idea what made the game so popular. The movie stars Jean Jean Claude Van Damme as Colonel William Guile. With lack of a better word, this movie was "cheesy". The idea of the movie is that General Bison, leader of an Asian country, takes hostage of some Allied Nations Aid workers and it is up to Colonel Guile to save the workers. The acting was as corny as the movie. Colonel Guile is supposed to be an All-American tough guy but is played by an actor with a thick French accent. With the movie's senseless uninspired martial arts fights, its odd cast of actors and the corny dialogue, awards this movie with a spot on my list for one of the worst video game movies ever.
5. Wing Commander
I'm not very familiar with the game but this movie is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The plot was too predictable as it follows that of other movies such as Star Wars, Top Gun, and Battlestar Gallatica... romanticsparks will fly, some hotshot will screw up and get someone killed and then feel bad about it, someone will have to be left behind enemy lines to serve the greater good, and the main character will ultimately prove himself. This movie was cheaply made as the special effects are almost funny. If you want a good science fiction movie with good acting and storytelling, Wing Commander is not for you.
4. Bloodrayne
Want to know a good horror movie to watch? Bloodrayne... is not it. This movie is pathetic. It's about a half vampire, half human lady who is torn between the need for blood and the love of humans. She is on a mission to avenge the raping of her mother by her father. The only positives are a few good camera shots and sexy leather outfits. This movie consists of over exaggerated killing, ridiculous outfits, obviously fake props and backdrops, and a random sex scene.
3. Alone in the Dark
Loosely based off the Atari game, Alone in the Dark is one of the more recent video game movie failures. This movie features Edward Carnby (Christian Slater), a private investigator specializing in unexplainable supernatural phenomena. It almost appears as if there were no scriptwriters in this movie as all it has is a few nice visuals but so much irrelevant details. Few mayhems lead up to forty minutes of running, shooting, and screaming. There are not many positive things to say about this movie.
2. House of the Dead
A movie so bad that it doesn't really deserve a short paragraph review, House of the Dead, is probably one of the "cheesiest" movies ever made. I'm not sure what the budget of this movie was but I can't imagine it being more than like $20 bucks. This movie is a sorry excuse of a "horror" movie. The most scared that I got while watching it is when I started to realize that I had a whole other hour of it. The costumes used in this movie were worse looking than regular Halloween costumes. The only positive thing of this movie is that it did kind of follow along with the game. But in the end, this movie wasn't even worthy of m y time writing this paragraph or your time reading it.
1. Super Mario Bros Drum roll please. This movie takes the prize. Super Mario Bros is the worst video game movie of all time. How could a movie be so bad that's based on the legendary game Super Mario Bros? This movie shows almost no representation of the game at all. The plot of the game is usually Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach and it's up to the brothers to save her. The plot of the movie is Bowser wants a stone that gives him powers. Daisy has the rock. Bowser kidnaps her and it's up to the brothers to save her. The thing is... nothing in the movie resembled the game. Luigi is played by a Latino. Mario is played by an English man. In the end, this movie is nothing but corny jokes and bad dialogue. I liked this movie as a child, probably because I was retarded or something. Looking at it again recently... wow... so bad. If I had to rate it I'd give it negative points. It was not a hard decision to make this movie number one on my list for the worst movies based on video games.

Post a CommentQuestion answered had I just looked at your article first. Great article and I see we both agree that Angelina Jolie was perfect. I really liked her in the movie, the script was just terrible. I see you got Doom, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark on there. I will admit that I like these movies even though they are terrible. I think everyone has some movies they like that everyone else hates, I call them the so bad they are good movies. I admit it I like cheesy movies. Great review, I really liked it.
