Song Lyrics and Morality

Sherrill Fulghum
Music like writing is a right of freedom covered by the First Amendment to the Constitution as a Freedom of Speech. As such it cannot be legally censored. While radio stations may ban or refuse to play songs due to content that violates Federal Communications Commission laws; this is not a censorship of freedom.

It is not the job or responsibility of the Music Industry to censor its artists. Artists themselves should have enough personal pride and self respect in themselves and their work not to produce the type of songs that would warrant such feelings of warranting censorship.

On the other hand no one is holding a gun to anyone's head forcing them to listen to songs that they feel are offensive for whatever reason. There is enough music out there that everyone should be able to find something they like.

Every radio and television has a dial that says tune (or channel) and on/off. It's a very simple matter. If you don't like it then change the station or turn it off.

Before song lyrics became lyrics they were poems. Poems are a form of writing. And writing is protected by the highest laws of our land. HOWEVER; the writer still should be mature enough to know the difference between art and garbage.
