Songs You Should Download for Your Kids

Positive Songs with Positive Messages

A. Hermitt

I recently wrote an article entitled, Kids Bop: Do I Want My Kid Singing Those Song Lyrics, though few acknowledged me as being right, no one challenged me either. My husband likes to say, "don't bring up a problem if you don't have the answer, so besides saying READ THE LYRICS FIRST, I will suggest some music that is good for your children to listen to.

I listen to a radio station called The Fish, In Atlanta it is 104.7, and it is available in several other markets as well. There are similar radio stations as well. The fish is a Christian station without being gospel or Christian Rock. Marketed as "Safe for the whole family, I have noticed that many of the songs are mainstream pop, with positive messages. Some are even love songs sans the descriptive nature so popular today. This is where many of my song recommendations come from.

"We Live" by Superchick, is a message that with little time on this earth, we all need to live and love a bit more. The lyrics are: "We live, we love, we forgive and never give up, and Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above and today we remember to live and to love. "

My son's person favorite Move Along, by All-American Rejects, encourages the listener to pick him or herself up and keep going with the lyrics, "When all you got to keep is strong, Move along, move along like I know you do. And even when your hope is gone, move along move along just to make it though."

Though I would not recommend, you go out and purchase this CD for your children the song "Beautiful", by Christian Aguilera, I do recommend you download this single for their MP3 players. Songs this beautiful should not be ignored. The lyrics are: "I am beautiful, no matter what they say. Words cannot bring me down. I am beautiful in every single way. Words cannot bring me down. So don't you bring me down today?"

Similarly, the singers of the song on the top of my "don't let your kids listen to this" list, made one that I highly recommend. (I still do not know what they where thinking when they recorded "My Humps") The lyrics in "Where Is The love?", by Black Eye Peas states: "People killing people dying, children hurtin hear them crying, can you practice what you preach, would you turn the other cheek? Father, Father, Father help us, send some guidance from above, cause people got me got me questioning, where is the love ?". I also recommend their dance hit "Let's get it started", if your kids like to dance.

If you do not mind overtly Christian lyrics, may I suggest my current ring tone? '"Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. This song tells the story of a girl whose life has gone awry, but she found her way back to God. The chorus is " Jesus take the wheel, take it from my hands, cause I can't do this on my own, I'm letting go, so give me one more chance, to save me from this road I'm on, Jesus take the wheel." Other great songs coming from the TV show American Idol (Carrie won in 2005) are "I Believe" by Fantasia Barrino or Diana Degarmo. Ruben Studdard, The 2003 winner also has a few good songs; just do not buy the CD, Soulful. At least 3of the songs are highly inappropriate.

  • The Fish radio station (available in several cities) is a great source for positive music
  • A singer with "bad" songs may also have very positive songs
The Black Eye Peas recorded both "My Humps" and "Where is the Love"
